College football recruiting 2013: The high school standouts who became college stars

  • Not every high school superstar goes becomes a star in college and not every player who becomes a superstar in college was a top recruit in high school.

    Over the past few years, we?ve seen some elite prospects come through the high school all-star circuit and become some of the best players in college. Sporting News recruiting reporter Brian McLaughlin looks back at some of those players Sporting News covered in high school before they became the household names they are today.

  • High school/hometown: Northern Guilford (Greensboro, N.C.)

    College: Cal

    SN prep ranking: No. 70 in 2010

    What he?s done: Allen had 2,570 career yards receiving in three seasons, with 205 receptions and 17 TDs. He recently declared for the NFL draft, forgoing his senior season. Injuries limited him at the end of 2012, but as a sophomore he was first-team All Pac-12.

    College: USC

    SN prep ranking: No. 3 in 2009

    What he?s done: Barkley threw for more than 12,000 career yards and 116 touchdowns as a four-year starter, and was considered a serious threat to win this year?s Heisman Trophy before injuries and on-the-field struggles ended those dreams.

  • High school/hometown: St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)

    College: North Carolina

    SN prep ranking: No. 81 in 2010

    What he?s done: After tearing his ACL, forcing him to redshirt in 2010, Bernard set a UNC freshman record in 2011 with 1,253 rushing yards and led the ACC with 13 TDs. This season, despite missing two games, he ran for 1,228 yards and 12 scores, added five receiving TDs and returned two punts for scores, including a 74-yarder with 13 seconds left to beat rival NC State. He?s entering the NFL draft.

    College: Alabama

    SN prep ranking: No. 10 in 2011

    What he?s done: Earned playing time as a true freshman at safety in 2011 and emerged as a playmaker this season. He started nine games, recorded 37 tackles and had a team-best five interceptions for the 2012 BCS champions. He?s expected to be one of the key pieces to Nick Saban?s defense in 2013.

    College: Alabama

    SN prep ranking: Outside SN?s Top 125

    What he?s done: The true freshman came out of nowhere to put together the best season by a freshman in Alabama history. He caught 59 passes for 1,000 yards?both topped Julio Jones? freshman mark?and 11 TDs, also the most by a Bama freshman.

  • High school/hometown: Dwyer (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.)

    College: Florida

    SN prep ranking: No. 7 in 2010

    What he?s done: Decided to skip senior his season next year and is considered a potential first-round draft pick. Had six career interceptions as a safety, while notching nearly 175 career tackles. He was a two-year starter for the Gators.

    College: Florida

    SN prep ranking: No. 10 in 2010

    What he?s done: Floyd has decided to skip his senior season so that he can explore options in the NFL, and he?s expected to be drafted in the early rounds. He had two sacks in Florida?s Sugar Bowl loss and finished with 46 tackles and 13 tackles for loss this season.

    College: South Carolina

    SN prep ranking: No. 2 in 2010

    What he?s done: Lattimore has struggled with injuries the past two seasons, but in three years was still able to break former Heisman winner George Rogers? school record for career rushing TDs with 38. Lattimore has decided to enter the NFL draft a year early.

    College: Alabama

    SN prep ranking: No. 26 in 2010

    What he?s done: He started 11 games as a freshman and hasn?t looked back since. In three seasons, he has six interceptions. He established himself as one of the nation?s best corners this season, earning All-American honors while totaling 54 tackles, two interceptions and a team-best 20 pass breakups. Considered a first-round pick, he?s undecided if he will enter the NFL draft.

    College: Florida

    SN prep ranking: No. 1 in 2010

    What he?s done: Powell managed 57 tackles and 11? tackles for loss and 7 sacks in his first two years playing for Florida before injuries forced him to miss the 2012 season. He is already being mentioned as a high NFL draft pick for 2014 if he rebounds well this fall, even though he has two years left of eligibility.

    College: USC (formerly Penn State)

    SN prep ranking: No. 63 in 2010

    What he?s done: In three seasons in college?the first two at Penn State and 2012 at USC after transferring?Reed has rushed for more than 2,500 career yards and 18 TDs. He appears to be returning for his senior season at USC.

    College: Tennessee/Tennessee Tech

    SN prep ranking: No. 83 in 2010

    What he?s done: Rogers burst onto the scene as a sophomore in 2011 as Tyler Bray?s go-to receiver. He totaled 1,040 receiving yards and nine scores. He transferred to Tennessee Tech after being suspended prior to the 2012 season and hauled in 61 passes for 893 yards and 10 TDs this season. He?s announced that he?s entering the NFL draft.

    College: Baylor (formerly Oregon)

    SN prep ranking: No. 4 in 2010

    What he?s done: After a rough first two years in college?one redshirting at Oregon and the next sitting out because of a transfer to Baylor?Seastrunk topped 1,000 yards rushing this year with seven rushing touchdowns. He told Sporting News in December he should be considered a Heisman threat in 2013.

    College: Notre Dame

    SN prep ranking: No. 2 in 2009

    What he?s done: Te?o was invited to the Heisman Trophy ceremony this year, a rare accomplishment for a defense-only player. He finished his four-year college career with 427 tackles and 34 tackles for loss, leading the Fighting Irish to the national title game.
