London marathon runner Claire Squires died of heart attack after taking sports supplement Jack3D

  • Claire Squires collapsed less than a mile from the marathon's finish line
  • The experienced runner had bought Jack3D online months before
  • Boyfriend Simon Van Herrewege said she planned to take some on the day
  • Product has since been banned in UK after being linked to several deaths

An energy supplement which has a similar effect on the body as amphetamines caused the heart attack death of a charity runner who collapsed less than a mile before the finish line of last year's London Marathon, a coroner said today.

Claire Squires, 30, whose death led to almost ?1 million of donations being made to the Samaritans, put a scoopful of Jack3D in her water bottle to give her an energy boost if she 'hit a wall', an inquest heard today.

But hairdresser Miss Squires collapsed on Birdcage Walk, close to Buckingham Palace, on April 22 last year.

Paramedics battled to save her, but she died later in hospital.

Recording a narrative verdict, Coroner Dr Philip Barlow laid the blame for her death on the supplement, which contains DMAA - an amphetamine-type stimulant linked to high blood pressure strokes and death.

Following today's inquest her family called for tighter regulations surrounding DMAA which was banned in Britain by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency last August.

Although it is not illegal to possess or even take DMAA, any supplement containing DMAA, including Jack3D, is not licensed in the UK after a ruling by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency).

That means it is now illegal for any retailer to sell any substance containing DMAA in Britain. It can still be bought and shipped from abroad.

?

The MHRA said there were concerns about the side-effects of the product, including dizziness, headaches, nausea and there have been cases worldwide where it has been linked with heart attacks and breathing difficulties.

A spokesman for the MHRA said it had tried to take it off the UK market prior to last August but it was delayed by an appeal from one of the retailers of the product.

Her boyfriend Simon Van Herrewege had told the inquest that Miss Squires, who had run the marathon two years previously, had bought a tub of Jack3D on the internet two or three months before running the marathon and is said to have taken some on the day.

He told the inquest: 'She never really got on with it. I don't think she particularly liked it, but she said for the marathon she wanted to beat her previous time.

'She said she was going to take one scoop of it in her water bottle and if she hit a wall she would take it to give her a boost.'

Claire had taken part in several long distance races including the London Marathon, Belfast Marathon and Great North Run before and taken part in gruelling challenges like climbing Kilimanjaro.

Mr Van Herrewege said: 'She was very active. She would regularly run a number of miles at weekends and exercised at least five days a week. She knew what she was doing.'

The 31-year-old told how he waited with Claire's friends and family near the finishing line but she never crossed it.

Off-duty paramedic Donna Tucker was there supporting a colleague when she saw Claire collapse.

She said: 'I saw a female with dark hair in a ponytail and a blue T-shirt on with the name Claire go past me.

'She appeared tired and was slowing down. I called Claire's name to encourage her.

'She made eye contact as she started to run again. But then she slowed down suddenly and started to struggle towards the barrier reaching out with both hands in an attempt to steady herself.

She added: 'At this point Claire appeared to have a very mild seizure which lasted about five seconds.'

St John Ambulance volunteers rushed to Miss Squires's aid but Miss Tucker leapt over the barrier to help when she saw her lips and cheeks turn blue.

She said: 'She wasn't breathing and had no pulse. I started chest compressions.

'She was initially breathing very slow, gasping breaths which is common in cardiac arrest which then stops.

'St John's brought a defibrillator and ventilator bag and I continued until the London Ambulance Service got there.'

?'It would give someone a racing heart, increasing heart rate and make the heart work much harder than it naturally would.'

Claire was taken to St Thomas' hospital but doctors were unable to save her.

She had been running the marathon in memory of her brother Grant, who died aged 25 from a drugs overdose in 2001.

Miss Squires, from North Kilworth in Leicestershire, was buried next to her brother and her funeral was attended by hundreds.

Reports of her death prompted thousands of people to log on to her Justgiving page to raise almost ?950,000 in her memory for the Samaritans.

She had posted on her page that she was initially taking part in the run for fun but that it was an opportunity to raise funds and 'change lives.'

Miss Squires was one of more than 37,000 people taking part in the London Marathon. Her death is the tenth since the event began in 1981.

The last competitor to die was a 22-year-old fitness instructor in 2007.

UK medicine watchdog MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) banned the Jack3D drink last August for public safety it was linked with several deaths in America.

Dr Nicola Drake, an A&E consultant at St Thomas', said it contained a stimulant called DMAA which acts 'like amphetamines.'

Claire Squires had run several long distance races in the past

She said: 'It would give someone a racing heart, increasing heart rate and make the heart work much harder than it naturally would.

'I didn't know much about it at the time, but from research we did on the day Claire died I know it has been associated with deaths in America of soldiers doing extreme exercise.'

DMAA has also been linked with high blood pressure, headaches, vomiting and strokes.

Dr Drake said she could not say if this contributed to Claire's death, but added: 'It is not something I would expect to happen to someone who was running a marathon who is fit and healthy but I can't answer that.

'All I can say is it is very unusual.'

But cardiologist Professor William McKenna said that the supplement may have been an important factor in her death.

He told the inquest that a postmortem didn't find any significant abnormalities with Miss Squires's heart but found 'toxic plasma levels of an amphetamine-like substance which could have contributed to the development of a fatal arrhythmia.'

The inquest heard Claire went to visit acupuncturist Stephanie Curnoe in October 2011 who discovered she had an irregular heartbeat during treatment which later returned to normal.

Miss Curnoe said she told her to visit her GP as it could warrant further investigation but it is not believed she ever did.

However Professor McKenna said he believed her irregular pulse was 'probably a red herring' and added: 'The substance in the blood was probably an important factor in the outcome.'

Dr John Van Der Walt, who carried out the post-mortem on the runner, told the inquest the runner had died from heart failure brought on by extreme physical exertion.

The medic said the DMAA contained in the Jack3d taken by Claire - who was unaware of its dangers - had contributed to her deadly fatigue.

He told the inquest: 'There had already been several deaths in the American army and it had been banned by the American army.

High spirits: Claire Squires, pictured (left) the day before she ran the London Marathon last year, and smiling for a family photo, right

'I understand it is banned in several countries.

'On Amazon, Jack3d is still being sold. But DMAA has been removed from the product.

'DMAA causes vascular restriction and increases heart rate.

'On the balance of probability DMAA was a contributory factor on the cause of death.'

Another witness told that Claire lost an unusual amount of blood while being treated at the hospital.

Professor Sanjay Sharma, from St George's Hospital in London and medical director for the London Marathon, said: 'It (DMAA) may have contributed to the amount of blood seen. It was an unusual amount for a cardiac arrest in such a young person.'

He added that the he had no idea how many marathon participants are taking supplements such as Jack3d.?

Final preparations: Claire pictured in her running gear the night before the London Marathon

Final preparations: Claire pictured in her running gear the night before the London Marathon

Professor Andrew Kicman, a biochemist at King's College London, added that many sports people taking Jack3d were unaware of what they were taking.

Recording a narrative verdict at Southwark Coroners Court, Dr Philip Barlow said: 'She had taken a supplement containing DMAA which on the balance of probabilities and combined with extreme physical excursion caused acute cardiac failure which resulted in her death.'

Dr Barlow said he hoped others would learn from Claire's death and avoid taking
dangerous supplements.

He added: 'Claire Squires was an otherwise fit and healthy 30-year-old.

'We have heard that she trained hard and very seriously for that event.

'She had run marathons before and by any standards she was extremely fit.'

Dismissing evidence that an acupuncturist had warned Miss Squires that she had an irregular heartbeat, the coroner said it would have been likely that any problem would have become apparent on other occasions.

He said: 'Claire had run marathons before and exercised to a very high degree of excursion before.?

'DMAA is a supplement. It is clear that Claire had bought that and had put it in her water bottle to
take if she needed during the marathon.

'It was not a normal supplement for her, but she had taken it on this occasion.

'It was under the brand name Jack3d. Although we have heard DMAA may now have
been removed from Jack3d.

'It is very important to make the point that we have heard a lot of evidence today which has described DMAA as an amphetamine-like substance, I do not want anyone leaving this court today with the impression that Claire had taken amphetamines.

'There is no evidence that she had done so.

Huge event: Claire was one of 37,000 people who lined up at the start line of the annual race

Huge event: Claire was one of 37,000 people who lined up at the start line of the annual race

['DMAA is a blood constrictor, it narrows vessels and increases blood pressure. It has been linked with deaths in American army and banned in at least one other country.

'There is a risk of harm of taking that substance during extreme exercise. But there is not evidence that Claire was aware of that risk.

'On the balance of probability I accept the evidence that DMAA contributed to Claire's death.'

Following the verdict, Miss Squires's family said that she was very anti-drugs.

In a statement read outside Southwark Coroners Court her boyfriend Mr Van Herrewege, 31, said: 'This has been an extremely difficult year for us.

'Claire's death has left a gaping hole in our lives but we will remember her every day with a smile.

'She died running for charity. She was passionately against drugs and never used them and never thought they would end her life.

'She innocently took this supplement which was widely available at the time. It is now clear there should have been far better regulations in place so no tragedies like this can happen again.

'No other family should have to go what we've been through.

'Claire was a beautiful person who would do anything to help other and was liked by all who knew her.'

The family thanked the public for their support following Miss Squires's death.

'I hope it will help Claire's memory live on,' her boyfriend added.

The London Marathon organisers said today that they will include information about substances such as Jack3d for runners for future events.

BANNED IN THE UK SINCE AUGUST 2012 - THE ENERGY SUPPLEMENT WITH THE SAME EFFECT AS AMPHETAMINE

Banned: Jack3d contains a stimulant called DMAA

Banned: Jack3d contains a stimulant called DMAA

Jack3D contained a stimulant known as DMAA (dimethylamylamine) that has been linked to high blood pressure, headaches, vomiting, stroke and even death.

The UK?s medicines watchdog MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) ruled last August that it is unlicensed and that all other DMAA containing products needed to be removed from the market to protect public safety.

Although DMAA is not illegal to take or possess in the UK it is no longer licensed.

The decision followed similar warnings around the world, including in the US and Australia where a man died after buying DMAA online.

Jack3d is said to boost energy, concentration and metabolism. But DMAA, most commonly used as a workout aid or dietary supplement, can have a physiological effect on the body by narrowing the arteries and raising the heart rate, said the MHRA.

This has been linked to suspected adverse drug reactions worldwide, ranging from shortness of breath to heart attacks.

An MHRA spokesperson said at the time: 'Jack3d is mainly bought over the internet although it is also available in sports stores specialising in work out products.

'If we find a shop selling it we will send them a written reminder asking them to remove it from their shelves. If they ignore this then our enforcement officers will move in and begin legal action.

'It is the most popular sports supplement in the UK because it is a stimulant that allows you to work out for longer.

'But it is for people who are really into their fitness. Your average person who goes to the gym once or twice a week is unlikely to have ever used it.'

Johnny Cash leaves his stamp on Postal Service

? 2013 U.S. Postal Service

By Matt Murray, TODAY

The "man in black" is going postal - officially. The United States Postal Service has announced that a Johnny Cash stamp will be issued this year as part of its new "Music Icons" series.?

According to BeyondthePerf.com, a web extension of the USA Philatelic catalog, the stamp is meant to resemble a 45 rpm record sleeve. The black-and-white portrait of Cash featured on the stamp was taken by Frank Bez in 1963, during a photo shoot for "Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash."

USPS representative Mark Saunders said that Cash is the first of three performing artists announced in the series. The other two will be revealed later this year.

The process for selecting topics for its stamps can be a long one for the USPS.

"We get about 40,000 suggestions for stamp ideas each year but only about 20 topics make the cut," Saunders said. "These suggestions are reviewed by the Postmaster General?s Citizens? Stamp Advisory whose role is to narrow down that 40,000 to roughly 20 and then provide their recommendations to the Postmaster General for final approval."

Johnny Cash was active in the Nashville music scene?for nearly five decades, beginning in the 1950s. It was his rendition of "Ring of Fire," co-written by wife June Carter Cash, in 1963 that helped make him a crossover hit. The single reached No. 17 on the Billboard 200, and stayed on the charts for more than a year.?

Johnny Cash was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. He died of complications due to?diabetes?in 2003.

A release date for the stamp has not been announced.

5 Ways to Enhance Your Relationship Every Day | World of ...

5 Ways to Enhance Your Relationship Every DayThe everyday ? filled with its supposedly inconsequential interactions and circumstances ? is actually quite consequential when it comes to romantic relationships.

That?s because relationships are cumulative, said Nikki Massey-Hastings, Psy.D, a psychotherapist who specializes in couples. ?Each seemingly insignificant daily interaction with one?s partner builds upon the interactions from yesterday, last week, and last year? for better or worse.?

A couple with a history of loving interactions and success solving daily problems is more likely to have a securely attached relationship, Massey-Hastings said.

And that?s a great thing. Couples with a secure attachment are able to rely on each other, turn to each other for comfort and traverse potentially tough times, she noted.

In other words, positive daily interactions create buffers against future challenges.

Take parenting, for instance. One of Massey-Hastings?s clients told her: ?We finally had dinner and watched a movie last night for the first time since we brought the baby home. At the end of our night, we smiled at each other and said ?see you in 3 months! Miss you.??

This couple was able to joke about their situation because they had years of wonderful interactions and success dealing with mundane problems like decorating their bedroom and deeply emotional ones like figuring out treatments for their autistic son, she said.

Silvina Irwin, Ph.D, a clinical psychologist who also works with couples, described relationships as ?living bonds.? According to Irwin, ?without regular tending and attention, [the relationship] will wither and suffer.?

But you might be worried that working on your relationship is another time-consuming task to heap on an already overflowing pile of responsibilities. However, as Irwin said, ?tending to your relationship can be woven into the fabric of your everyday life with a little extra thought and intention.?

Below, she and Massey-Hastings share five suggestions for enhancing your relationship every day.

1. Create connection-boosting rituals.

?Create a meaningful way to connect that meets both partners? needs for connection that you can count on each day,? Massey-Hastings said. For instance, when she was just beginning her career, she and her husband would eat dinner together almost every night.

But then her schedule changed, and that was no longer possible. ?One week of this shift and we were both in tears ? we didn?t realize how much that ritual structured our time to connect,? she said. So they revised their routine. Today, they have a snack when she gets home.

?Eating together and talking about the day, for couples and for families, is a very powerful ritual of connection,? she said.

Rituals don?t need to be elaborate, either. It could be something as simple as rubbing each other?s feet every night, which Massey-Hastings and her husband also do. It?s a minute but meaningful ritual they look forward to, she said.

If you have kids, you can create rituals after they?re in bed. For instance, Massey-Hastings works with a couple who cuddles in bed for 30 minutes after putting their child to bed.

2. Be affectionate when you say hello or goodbye.

?A time that lends itself naturally to acknowledging your bond is around moments of separation and reunions,? said Irwin, who also leads workshops for couples. She suggested asking yourself: ?Do I hug and kiss my partner when we greet each other or say goodbye??How about in the evening when we say goodnight??

If you?ve been together for a long time, you might not. But this can contribute to ?couples feeling more like roommates than lovers,? she said. Whether it?s a hug, kiss or touch, daily physical attention can greatly enhance your relationship.

3. Let your partner know they?re on your mind.

Send your partner a text, leave a loving note or give them a quick call during the day, Irwin said. As she noted, these seemingly small gestures communicate an important message: ?You matter to me.? ?This can be especially meaningful when folks work long hours or experience prolonged periods of separation,? she said.

4. Acknowledge how much your partner means to you.

Let your partner know the things they do or say that are meaningful to you, Irwin said. Maybe your partner gives you a massage every night or cracks a joke after you?ve had a tough day at work. Maybe they make you coffee every morning or always wash the dishes after you cook dinner.

?[This] shows that you aren?t taking your partner for granted, and lets them know that they make a difference in your life,? she said. ?A wonderful positive spiral that can ensue when we take a moment to point out the way we appreciate our partner,? she added.

5. Check in with each other.

?Make it an intention to slow down, make eye contact, sit near each other, touch one another and check in,? Irwin said. Even just asking your partner ?How are you?? is a beautiful way to bond.

?These conversations bring a significant point of connection in couples? sometimes-busy, seemingly parallel lives.?It?s saying to each other ?In our crazy lives, the person I want to talk with at the end of the day is you!?? she said.

Relationships certainly take work. But nourishing your partnership every day isn?t painstaking. Instead, it gives you the opportunity to build your bond. Plus, helping your relationship blossom on a daily basis helps you cope better as a couple with the inevitable challenges of life.

Pfizer Q4 net jumps on sale of nutrition business

Pfizer Inc.'s fourth-quarter profit more than quadrupled, despite competition from generic drugs hurting sales of Lipitor and other medicines, because of a $4.8 billion gain from selling its nutrition business. The drugmaker's profit and sales both beat Wall Street expectations.

The world's biggest drugmaker said Tuesday that its net income was $6.32 billion, or 85 cents per share, up from $1.44 billion, or 19 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding the windfall from selling its nutrition business to Nestle SA for $11.5 billion on Nov. 30, and a total of $888 million for restructuring, legal and other one-time items, the Viagra maker would have had a profit of $3.51 billion, or 47 cents per share. That's 3 cents more than analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting.

In early trading, the New York-based company's shares rose 26 cents, or 1 percent, to $27.10.

Revenue fell 7 percent to $15.1 billion, mainly due to generic competition to cholesterol blockbuster Lipitor. Analysts expected $14.35 billion.

"Overall, a good quarter driven by the revenue beat," BernsteinResearch analyst Dr. Timothy Anderson wrote to investors, calling Pfizer's 2013 financial forecast "a bit underwhelming."

Pfizer said it expects 2013 earnings per share of $2.20 to $2.30, excluding one-time items, and revenue of $56.2 billion to $58.2 billion. Analysts are expecting $2.28 per share and revenue of $57.55 billion.

Lipitor, which had reigned as the world's top-selling drug ever for nearly a decade, got U.S. generic competition in December 2011 and now has generic rivals in many major markets. The pill had been bringing Pfizer nearly $11 billion a year before then, down from its peak of $13 billion a year.

In the fourth quarter, Lipitor sales plunged 91 percent in the U.S. and 71 percent worldwide, to $584 million. A dozen other medicines also had lower sales due to generic competition.

Altogether, generic competition reduced prescription drug revenue by more than $2.1 billion. Unfavorable currency exchange rates lopped off another 2 percent, or $271 million.

However, several key newer drugs had double-digit sales increases, including fibromyalgia and pain treatment Lyrica, at $1.13 billion, painkiller Celebrex at $750 million, and the Prevnar 13 vaccine against meningitis and other pneumococcal infections, at $993 million. Viagra was up 6 percent at $553 million.

Altogether, Pfizer's prescription drug revenue fell 9 percent in the quarter, to $12.89 billion. The division was led by sales of primary-care medicines, which totaled $3.83 billion. Still, that was down 29 percent as Lipitor's sales in the two biggest markets, the U.S. and Japan, where shifted into the established products category. That segment, which markets off-patent drugs still popular in many countries, posted a 3 percent rise in revenue, to $2.37 billion.

Specialty products, such as Enbrel for psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis, and hemophilia treatments Refacto AF and Benefix, had revenue dip 4 percent, to a combined $3.67 billion. Sales in emerging markets such as China and India jumped 17 percent, to $2.65 billion, while sales of cancer drugs, a newer focus for Pfizer, rose 9 percent to $370 million.

The animal health business saw revenue increase 6 percent, to $1.17 billion. Pfizer is set to sell about a 20 percent share in the business, called Zoetis, in an initial public offering on Friday.

The consumer health business saw revenue jump 16 percent, to $936 million, due to strong growth of Advil pain reliever and Centrum vitamins.

He said Pfizer will soon launch two new medicines, rheumatoid arthritis treatment Xeljanz and ? with partner Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. ? potential blockbuster Eliquis, for preventing heart attacks and dangerous clots in patients with the irregular heartbeat atrial fibrillation. CEO Ian Read said Pfizer's mid- to late-stage drug pipeline "continues to strengthen with key potential opportunities," including drugs for advanced breast cancer and three other types of cancer, one for high cholesterol and a meningococcal B vaccine for adolescents and young adults.

For the full year, net income was $14.57 billion, or $1.94 per share. That was down from $10.01 billion, or $1.27 per share, in 2011. Revenue totaled $58.99 billion, down 10 percent from $65.26 billion in 2011, before generic competition slashed sales of Lipitor and schizophrenia drug Geodon.

(AP) ? The Netherlands' Queen Beatrix announced Monday that she is ending her reign after 33 years and passing the crown to her eldest son, who has long been groomed to be king but who will have to work hard to match his mother's popularity.

The widely expected abdication comes at a time of debate over the future of the largely ceremonial Dutch monarchy, but also as calm has descended upon the Netherlands after a decade of turmoil that saw Beatrix act as the glue that held together an increasingly divided society.

"Responsibility for our country must now lie in the hands of a new generation," Beatrix, one of Europe's longest-serving monarchs, said in the simple, televised speech announcing her abdication.

The queen, who turns 75 in just a few days, said she will step down from the throne on April 30. That same day, her eldest son, Willem-Alexander, will be appointed king at an inauguration in Amsterdam. He will be the Netherlands' first king since Willem III died in 1890.

Willem-Alexander is a 45-year-old father of three young daughters, an International Olympic Committee member, a pilot and a water management expert.

Over the years, he has struggled to win the affection of this nation of 16 million, but his immensely popular wife, the Argentine-born Maxima, has helped him gain more acceptance ever since she brushed away a tear during their wedding in 2002.

They are a hard-working couple: Willem-Alexander regularly gives speeches at water conferences, sharing his low-lying nation's centuries of experience battling to stay dry, while soon-to-be Queen Maxima, a former investment banker, has carved out a career as a microfinance expert.

Together, the pair has often been seen cheering on Dutch sportsmen and women at Olympics from Beijing, to Vancouver and London.

"He's known as 'Mister Water,' isn't he? He seems like a reliable person, just like his mother," said Desiree Hoving, an Amsterdam resident. "I don't really have an emotional response to him, but I do think it's nice that Maxima is going to be queen."

Despite regular public appearances, Willem-Alexander is also fiercely private, giving reporters and photographers brief, choreographed glimpses of his family in return for being left in peace the rest of the time.

"He and Princess Maxima are fully prepared for their future roles," Beatrix said. "They will serve our nation with dedication, faithfully preserve the constitution and bring all their talents to the monarchy."

Despite her popularity, Maxima has always carried an air of controversy because her father was an agriculture minister in the military junta that ruled Argentina with an iron fist in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

In a move that may curtail possible protests, the Royal House said that Maxima told Prime Minister Mark Rutte that her parents will not attend the inauguration.

In her brief, prerecorded speech from her Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague, Beatrix said she was, "deeply grateful for the great faith you have shown in me in the many years that I could be your queen."

The queen's departure is sure to bring about an outpouring of sentimental and patriotic feelings among the Dutch, most of whom adore Beatrix. In everyday conversation, many of her subjects refer to her simply by the nickname "Bea."

Well-wishers immediately gathered outside the palace Monday.

One of them, Laura Dinkshof, took along a homemade orange banner. "We hope the queen will see it," she said. "It says we were very happy with our queen and we wish her a nice retirement and that we have trust in our new king."

Rutte, a staunch monarchist, said that ever since her coronation in 1980, Beatrix ? the nation's oldest-ever monarch ? "applied herself heart and soul for Dutch society."

Beatrix succeeded her mother, Juliana, as head of state, and her reign has been marked by tumultuous shifts in Dutch society and, more recently, by personal tragedy.

Observers believe Beatrix remained on the throne for so long in part because of unrest in Dutch society as the country struggled to assimilate more and more immigrants, mainly Muslims from North Africa, and shifted away from its traditional reputation as one of the world's most tolerant nations.

Beatrix was also thought to be giving time for her son to enjoy fatherhood before taking the throne.

The abdication also comes at a time of trial for Beatrix. A year ago, she was struck by personal tragedy when the second of her three sons, Prince Friso, was left in a coma after being engulfed by an avalanche while skiing in Austria.

And even in a job that is mostly symbolic to begin with, the previous government stripped her of one of her few remaining powers: the ability to name a candidate to begin Cabinet formation after the election of the national parliament.

Beatrix's reign began in difficult economic times and there were riots in Amsterdam at her inauguration, as thousands of demonstrators protesting the city's housing shortages fought pitched battles with police just a few hundred meters (yards) from the downtown palace where she was crowned.

But throughout her tenure she was a calming influence on society, particularly in the aftermath of the 2002 assassination of populist politician Pim Fortuyn and the murder two years later of filmmaker Theo van Gogh by a Muslim extremist.

Personal tragedies have exposed a softer side of the queen and brought her closer to her subjects.

The 2002 death of her German-born husband, Prince Claus, took a toll on her, and it was apparent how deep her reliance on the quiet man had been: she was filmed leaning heavily, almost hanging, on Prince Friso's arm as they entered the church for her spouse's funeral.

In another blow, a deranged loner tried to slam a car into an open-topped bus carrying members of the royal family as they celebrated the Queens Day national holiday in 2009. The driver killed seven people who had gathered to watch the royals, a brazen attack that shocked the nation.

Friso, who had been such a support after Claus' death, remains in a coma. Late last year, the Royal House said he showed "very minimal" signs of consciousness.

"I think it's a good time for her to leave, with all that happened in her life recently," said 44-year-old Bert Duesenberg of The Hague as he stood at the queen's palace gates. "I also think that Alexander is ready to take over, and he has to do that. It is good news, and it's time for the change."

'Fruitvale,' 'Blood Brothers' win at Sundance

By Reuters

PARK CITY, Utah -- Drama film "Fruitvale" and documentary "Blood Brothers" won the top awards at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday, giving them a big boost to reach independent movie audiences this year.

Director Ryan Coogler wins the audience award for dramatic film for "Fruitvale" at the awards ceremony at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, on Jan. 26.

"Fruitvale," starring Octavia Spencer and Michael B. Jordan and directed by 26-year-old, first-time filmmaker Ryan Coogler," picked up the U.S. drama jury and audience awards for its "moral and social urgency."

The film is based on the true story of 22-year-old Oscar Grant, who was killed by police in Oakland, Calif., on New Year's Eve in 2008 and whose death sparked riots against police brutality. Movie studio The Weinstein Company purchased distribution rights for the film.

"This film had a profound impact on the audience that saw it ... this award goes out to my home in the Bay Area where Oscar Grant breathed, slept, loved, had fun and survived for 22 years," Coogler said in his acceptance speech.

Oscar-winning documentarian Davis Guggenheim awarded the U.S. documentary jury prize to "Blood Brothers," saying it shook the voting panel to their core.

The documentary follows an American man who moves to Africa and works with children suffering from HIV at an orphanage, and through his work, the children gain a voice.

Director Steve Hoover accepts the award for best documentary for the film "Blood Brothers" at the Sundance Film Festival.

"It is so encouraging for the kids ... their lives are so encouraging, and they die and no one remembers their name ... To take their story so that everyone sees it, it's so awesome," director Steve Hoover said."

Young actress Shailene Woodley, praised for her performance in "The Descendants" last year, and her co-star Miles Teller won the Special Jury acting prize in "The Spectacular Now."

Actress Lake Bell, who made her directorial debut in the U.S. drama category with quirky comedy "In A World," picked up the drama screenwriting award.

Hosted by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who premiered his raunchy directorial debut "Don Jon's Addiction" this year, the Sundance Film Festival Awards pick winners at the top gathering for independent movies made outside of Hollywood's major studios.

"Sundance is a community of people of filmmakers and film lovers who all believe together that there's more to movies than glitz and glamour and money and the box office. In Hollywood, you can feel like a freak if you talk about movies as art, and here, you don't have that," Gordon-Levitt said.

World cinema winners
The Sundance Film Festival, now in its 35th year, is backed by Robert Redford's Sundance Institute. The 10-day gathering of the independent film industry is held in snowy Park City, Utah.

In previous years, films that win the top prizes at the Sundance Film Festival often go on to achieve Hollywood awards success as well.

Last year, mythological drama "Beasts of the Southern Wild" won the top prize at Sundance and is now nominated for four Oscars in major categories.

The award winners are voted for by special juries of industry professionals and by the audience for the audience favorite awards.

In the world cinema categories, South Korean drama "Jiseul" picked up the grand jury drama prize. The film, directed by Muel O, follows the residents of a small town who were forced to hide in a cave for 60 days after the military attacked their village.

Cambodian documentary "A River Changes Course," about three young Cambodians struggling with adversity in a country ravaged by war and debt, picked up the world cinema grand jury award.

"Events like these really bring our communities together to share in the beauty of the world and the beauty of our future," director Kalyanee Mam said.

"Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer," which follows the story of three members of a Russian feminist punk band jailed for performing a "punk prayer" in a Russian Orthodox church, picked up special jury prize in the world documentary category.

Co-director Mike Lerner said the three members of the band had "started a feminist revolution that we hope will continue around the world."

Senators reach agreement on immigration reform

(AP) ? A bipartisan group of leading senators has reached agreement on the principles for a sweeping overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, including a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already in this country.

The deal, to be announced at a news conference Monday, also covers border security, non-citizen or "guest" workers and employer verification of immigration status.

Although thorny details remain to be negotiated and success is far from certain ? the legislation could run into trouble in the Republican-controlled House ? the development heralds the start of what could be the most significant effort in years toward overhauling the nation's inefficient patchwork of immigration laws.

President Barack Obama also is committed to enacting comprehensive immigration legislation and will travel to Nevada on Tuesday to lay out his vision, which is expected to overlap in important ways with the Senate effort.

The eight senators expected to endorse the new principles Monday are Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

Several of these lawmakers have worked for years on the issue. McCain collaborated with the late Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on comprehensive immigration legislation pushed by then-President George W. Bush in 2007, only to see it collapse in the Senate when it couldn't get enough GOP support.

Now, with some Republicans chastened by the November elections which demonstrated the importance of Latino voters and their increasing commitment to Democrats, some in the GOP say this time will be different.

"What's changed, honestly, is that there is a new, I think, appreciation on both sides of the aisle ? including maybe more importantly on the Republican side of the aisle ? that we have to enact a comprehensive immigration reform bill," McCain said Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

"I think the time is right," McCain said.

The group claims a notable newcomer in Rubio, a potential 2016 presidential candidate whose conservative bona fides may help smooth the way for support among conservatives wary of anything that smacks of amnesty. In an opinion piece published Sunday in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Rubio wrote that the existing system amounts to "de facto amnesty," and he called for "commonsense reform."

According to documents obtained by The Associated Press, the senators will call for accomplishing four goals:

?Creating a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already here, contingent upon securing the border and better tracking of people here on visas.

?Reforming the legal immigration system, including awarding green cards to immigrants who obtain advanced degrees in science, math, technology or engineering from an American university.

?Creating an effective employment verification system to ensure that employers do not hire illegal immigrants.

?Allowing more low-skill workers into the country and allowing employers to hire immigrants if they can demonstrate they couldn't recruit a U.S. citizen; and establishing an agricultural worker program.

The principles being released Monday are outlined on just over four pages, leaving plenty of details left to fill in. What the senators do call for is similar to Obama's goals and some past efforts by Democrats and Republicans, since there's wide agreement in identifying problems with the current immigration system. The most difficult disagreement is likely to arise over how to accomplish the path to citizenship.

In order to satisfy the concerns of Rubio and other Republicans, the senators are calling for the completion of steps on border security and oversight of those here on visas before taking major steps forward on the path to citizenship.

Even then, those here illegally would have to qualify for a "probationary legal status" that would allow them to live and work here ? but not qualify for federal benefits ? before being able to apply for permanent residency. Once they are allowed to apply they would do so behind everyone else already in line for a green card within the current immigration system.

That could be a highly cumbersome process, but how to make it more workable is being left to future negotiations. The senators envision a more streamlined process toward citizenship for immigrants brought here as children by their parents, and for agricultural workers.

The American Civil Liberties Union said in a statement that the framework agreed on by the senators could provide important protections for illegal immigrants who are exploited by employers and live in "constant fear" over their immigration status.

But the ACLU took issue with the proposal to require employers to use an electronic employment-verification system, calling it "a thinly disguised national ID requirement" that would undermine employees' privacy and lead to discrimination against those "who look or sound 'foreign.'"

Such legislation could also face long odds in the House, which is dominated by conservative Republicans and which has shown little interest in immigration reform.

The debate will play out at the start of Obama's second term, as he aims to spend the political capital afforded him by his re-election victory on an issue that has eluded past presidents and stymied him during his first term despite his promises to the Latino community to act.

"As the president has made clear for some time, immigration reform is an important priority and he is pleased that progress is being made with bipartisan support," a White House spokesman, Clark Stevens, said in a statement. "At the same time, he will not be satisfied until there is meaningful reform and he will continue to urge Congress to act until that is achieved."

For Republicans, the November elections were a stark schooling on the importance of Latino voters, who voted for Obama over Republican Mitt Romney 71 percent to 27 percent, helping ensure Obama's victory. That led some Republican leaders to conclude that supporting immigration reform with a path to citizenship has become a political imperative.

What's cooking with Pinterest? | Food & Drink | The Sun Herald

Unless you have a favorite site, searching blindly for recipes online can be frustrating.

I've found that one of the easiest ways to find recipes on the Web is to search on Pinterest. It's like an index for the largest cookbook ever.

According to business intelligence firm RJMetrics, 10.5 percent of all pinboards on Pinterest are categorized under Food, the website's fastest?growing category. It's also the category that gets the most repins, generating on average more than 50 percent repins than the second-most reshared category, Style and Fashion.

"Pinterest has proven to be a fun, useful, and, let's admit, addictive space for home cooks and foodies," said CookingLight.com editor Allison Long Lowery. Cooking Light is one of the most popular boards to re-pin.

"We're excited about the level of engagement it brings to our recipes. As people create beautiful boards of food photography, they are organizing their favorite recipes. We love the idea of people planning their healthy meals from favorite recipe pin boards. And don't believe what you've heard: We know decadent, not-so-healthy recipes find a home on Pinterest, but we see enormous interest for healthy recipes that feature seasonal ingredients.

"The growth of Pinterest is staggering. For Cooking Light in 2012, we saw nearly 750 per cent growth in traffic referrals from Pinterest to our site and the numbers continue to trend up," Lowery said.

Because Pinterest is such a popular place to search for recipes, we decided to look for healthy recipes and asked for help from some local pinners.

Hope Arnold of Georgetown, Ky., is on Pinterest almost daily, she said.

"Every night before I go to sleep I spend about 15 to 20 minutes on the iPad checking email and on Pinterest."

From what she finds there, Arnold prepares about one new recipe a month.

"I mostly pin things for parties and holiday-themed treats for school," she said. "I am more likely to pin a recipe and adapt it to something that I can pull out of the pantry. I am terrible about remembering ingredients at the market that are not on the usual weekly to-buy list."

Toa Green, chef/owner of Thai Orchid Cafe in Lexington, Ky., said she pins recipes "as a way to keep up with dishes I want to try and make. It's a fun way to get ideas for recipes or new dishes."

Carolyn Gilles of Lexington, chef/instructor at The Wholesome Chef, said she likes Pinterest for recipes because it's so visual.

"I like to get inspired by what a dish may look like, colors or even just presentation ideas," she said. "I don't follow anyone in particular, but I usually like to search by foods that are in season and find recipes based around locally available foods."

Here are some recipes to help you stay focused on your healthier eating regimen for the new year.

Venezuela prison riot kills 61, government mum

URIBANA, Venezuela (Reuters) - A prison riot in southwestern Venezuela killed 61 people, a hospital official said on Sunday, although the government has refused to give an official death toll in the bloody standoff that highlighted chaos in the country's jails.

The violence took place on Friday at the Uribana jail near the city of Barquisimeto. Relatives who gathered outside the jail fumed at the lack of information from authorities who have started transferring prisoners to other facilities but have not confirmed how many were killed.

The rioting took place at a time when cancer-stricken President Hugo Chavez remains in Cuba receiving treatment and with Vice President Nicolas Maduro - the notional head of state - visiting the socialist leader in Havana and then traveling to a summit in Chile.

The riot was the fourth high-profile conflict in 18 months in a prison system that houses three times the number of inmates it was designed to hold. Critics say it is controlled by gangs with ready access to machine guns and even hand grenades.

"We're suffering here, and the government is saying nothing," said Josefina Ramirez, 36, whose 25-year-old husband was inside. "We want Chavez to come here to give us news. We want an answer."

Chavez has not been seen or heard from in 45 days, which has spurred criticism from opposition leaders that the country is effectively without a president. Allies insist he is fully carrying out duties.

Ruy Medina, director of the Barquisimeto Central Hospital, put the death toll at 61.

A hand-written list posted on a barbed wire fence outside the Uribana jail listed 20 dead and 104 injured. Outside the nearby morgue, where hearses lined up on Saturday to collect bodies, a similar list showed 24 dead.

It was not known who posted the lists. A prisons ministry official did not respond to requests for comment. Amid the silence, rumors circulated among family members at the prison gates that the death toll had reached as high as 400.

'BUNCH OF DEAD PEOPLE'

"There's a bunch of dead people tossed on the ground in there, the government doesn't want to take them out to avoid showing the reality," said Veronica Chavez, whose husband told her he was being transferred to another prison but did not know which. She called the list outside the prison "a lie."

Maduro vowed a full investigation of the incident in pre-dawn comments on Saturday just after arriving back in Venezuela from Havana. Within hours, he left to meet with Latin American and European dignitaries at a summit in Chile.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff scrapped her agenda at that summit and returned home after a nightclub fire killed at least 232 people.

Prisons Minister Iris Varela in a news conference said the riot was triggered by reports in the opposition media about plans to search the prison to remove weapons. "It seems as though their thirst for blood and terrible things will never be quenched," she said, referring to media.

Varela said reports had exaggerated the number of dead by including prisoners whose bodies showed signs they died several days before the incident - comments that critics seized as further evidence of the cruelty of the penitentiary system.

"They're not dogs, they're not animals, they're people like us," said Angelia Ibarra, 42, seeking information about her 25-year-old son inside. "The true animals are the government people."

Venezuelan jails have been increasingly in the headlines because of repeated shootouts and riots as well as conditions that are both outrageously cruel and downright surreal.

Inmates refusing to be transferred out of a Caracas prison battled security forces in May for days as smoke rose above the compound and shots rang out. Chavez later said he called from Cuba, where he was receiving medical treatment, and spoke with one of the inmates to help negotiate an end to the standoff.

Local media last year published a story about a nightclub called Disco Tokio that held a Mother's Day party that featured musical groups flown in from Colombia and Puerto Rico. The club was located inside the Tocoron jail.

An online animated series about jail violence called "Jail or Hell," produced by a former inmate, has drawn a following among Venezuelans captivated by the chaos of the prisons.
