boniness cogency: The Causes and Cure of Hemorrhoids - Health ...

The Causes and Cure of Hemorrhoids ? Health Fitness. Most people of adult age have probably suffered the indignity of having to cope with Hemorrhoids, otherwise known as Piles. As anyone who has suffered from piles knows, these can be very uncomfortable and painful. What exactly are Hemorrhoids? In a medical sense they are enlarged or swollen veins. They are somewhat similar to varicose veins that develop in the legs, except that these are veins located in the anus. These veins cushion and protect the anal canal. Problems arise when these veins are stretched and tear under pressure, resulting in the familiar discomfort and pain experienced with haemorrhoids. One may experience hemorroids as either internal or external. Internal hemorrhoids are located higher up in the anus and normally manifest themselves as stools covered in blood or blood on the toilet paper. Sometimes the hemorrhoids will protrude from the anal canal, in which case they should just be pushed back inside. External haemorrhoids, on the other hand, exist as hard lumps that can be felt by hand and are extremely painful compared to internal haemorrhoids. These may also cause bleeding which will be seen on the toilet paper or in the toilet bowl. Causes of Piles Constipation tends to be the main cause of Piles. The straining of bowel movement during prolonged siting on the toilet puts pressure on the blood vessel in the anal canal, causing swelling and irritation and eventual rupture of the blood vessels <b>?</b>

Hun Sen Encourages Cambodians to Emulate Chinese-Style Wealth ? cambodiadaily.com, December 30, 2012
??Let?s invest in small and big firms. Let?s make Cambodians become millionaires. Only in Cambodia are there no millionaires. In China there are many millionaires, so don?t think that a communist country has no millionaires,? the prime minister continued, adding that foreign investors should feel they have equal access to entering the market when competing with local enterprises.
Mr. Hun Sen said that promoting a wealthy class was the best way to help the poor.
?Make the bosses rich in Cambodia,? he said. ?Because when there are problems-for example when people need help with flooding?our local investors contribute a huge amount of money??

How to Get the Most Out of Ezine Advertising | Dave In China ? Dave ...

If there is anything at all that makes you feel overwhelmed with your online business, then that just means you have to learn a bit more and get more comfortable. This is just a trial phase as you get more familiar with click here, and those who survive have a good chance of going all the way. There are several reasons why those who are making money with their business tend to outsource as much as possible. We will delve into alternatives that will work well with what we have just mentioned. Never forget, when you are first exposed to something you have never tried before, proceed with caution and do some testing before doing a major roll-out. However, regardless of how you approach outsourcing or anything else, just recover and roll with any mistakes you may make. Ezine advertising has traditionally not received as much press as other methods, but that does not mean it is less effective than all the others. There are most definitely some things you want to do and also avoid if you desire the highest conversions for your ads. What are the wise and necessary steps to find an ezine publisher that is good for you? One of the hallmarks of an ezine business that has been around is the number of resources available on their site such as for initiating your ad run. But needless to say, they want business; so if there is no such form then something else will no doubt be in place. You want to talk to them a little to gauge how professional they are in their business. When you execute little strategies like this, the ezine owner probably will have no clue; those who do not care are worth avoiding. Those ezine publishers who take the time and effort to make sure things flow smoothly are the one who will take care of your ads. Few things can compare in IM to the power of testing, and the reason for that is you can optimize based on the results. There are other things you can test, and running scaled down tests for speedupmypchq.com or methods previously never used is one of them. Who will ever know why people in business do not do the things that will help them to make more money. You will learn from your mistakes such as proceeding a too quickly and without enough thought about the consequences. The scope of some projects can quickly and easily overwhelm a lot of newer marketers, and in that case do some testing and see what your results are. The extent of what will be involved in any test situation will be determined by your primary method of marketing. Have an open mind to what you can do, and in this instance we are thinking about all that is possible with using your own website as a test platform. Most people make use of Google Analytics for tracking everything that happens on their site, and that will be suitable for any testing. We are not sure how you feel, but we certainly feel like taking care of our particular subject line for our ad. The response to your ad will be horrible if the subject lines in any ezines that run ads are just something that states it is a solo ad. You realize how important this point is, so just save the hassle and avoid dealing with those who do not allow you to make your own subject lines. You want to deal with someone with a clue and wants you to succeed by helping you as much as possible. Your preliminary research is designed to give you the best idea or feeling that running an ad in any ezine may be worth it. Also, like we said, keep in mind that the results of other advertisers can be an indication but no prediction of your results. You can check out the older issues of the ezine publication by going through its archives; this will give you a clear idea as to how many advertisers have used the ezine for their needs in the past and how many of them repeated their ads. There are no guarantees that the archives will be there, but if so then you have something more to research. You can make mistakes with ezine advertising if you ignore the fact finding stages before advertising. There will never be an end to mistakes, and so you merely learn and keep moving forward. Then, keep in mind that successful ads will depend on other factors as well such as your ad copy, so there is more to this.

Gay marriage at Supreme Court: Will military couples get more benefits?

Same-sex military couples are not eligible for many benefits that heterosexual married couples in the military receive, including housing and medical care. But the Supreme Court could redefine the federal status of gay marriage next year.

By Anna Mulrine,?Staff writer / December 28, 2012

Retired Army Col. Grethe Cammermeyer, (l), kisses Diane Divelbess, her partner of 24 years, as they pose for photos after the two received their marriage license Dec. 6, in Coupeville, Wash. Two retired military women who fought for the rights of gays in the military were among the hundreds of couples who received their marriage licenses that week as Washington state's voter-approved law allowing same-sex marriage took effect.

When Chief Warrant Officer Charlie Morgan returned from a year-long deployment to Kuwait with the New Hampshire National Guard in 2010, her doctor didn?t have good news. The breast cancer thought to be in remission, the physician said, had returned, and the diagnosis was terminal.

That?s when Morgan began a new battle ? to make sure her wife and their daughter receive the same survivor benefits that would go to any other married couple with children.

The US Supreme Court?s decision to take up the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) could have a considerable impact on the benefits of same-sex spouses of service members, who were largely invisible to the military until the repeal of ?don?t ask, don?t tell? (DADT).

So far, the DADT repeal has simply meant that US troops no longer face being forced out of the military for their sexual orientation.

But for the partners of gay troops, the impact of the repeal has been less sweeping and more ambiguous.

Even when gay couples are legally married under state law, for example, Section 3 of DOMA forbids the US government from treating such military couples as married.

And so they are not eligible for the kinds of benefits that heterosexual married couples receive in the military, including housing, medical care, and in the case of Morgan and others, survivor benefits should they die while serving their country.

DOMA Section 3 is the specific measure that will be reviewed by the Supreme Court in March.?

Passed by Congress in 1996, the law declares that the word ?marriage? means only a legal union between one man and one woman and that the word ?spouse? refers only to a person of the opposite sex who is also a husband or wife.

As a result, under federal law, the benefits of marriage can go only to a person of the opposite sex, regardless of state law.

DOMA Section 3 has been declared unconstitutional by eight federal courts.?

The Obama administration said last year that it would enforce the law, but would no longer defend it in court.

Should DOMA Section 3 be struck down by the Supreme Court, ?My sense is that same-sex couples who are married under state law would be treated exactly the same as married couples are for the purposes of treatment on military installations and for benefits,? says Robert Tuttle, a law professor at George Washington University.

Currently, there is an ?exhaustive list? of benefits that same-sex spouses do not receive, says Zeke Stokes, spokesman for OutServe-Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, an advocacy organization in Washington.

Box Office Guru Wrapup: Hobbit Threepeats, Western & Musical Rock

For a third consecutive frame, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey led the North American box office but this time was joined by a trio of new releases opening on Christmas Day which filled up the next spots on the charts over a red hot final weekend of 2012.

Smashing through the $200M barrier, The Hobbit collected an estimated $32.9M in its third journey pushing the 17-day cume up to a sizable $222.7M. Warner Bros. enjoyed a slim 11% decline and fared very well during this past Christmas week. Finishing with $290M seems very likely while reaching the $300M mark remains a possibility as well. Hobbit should surpass $700M globally before the start of 2013.

Quentin Tarantino enjoyed the biggest debut of his career with his latest film Django Unchained which took in an estimated $30.7M over the weekend and a superb $64M in the six days since its Christmas Day launch on Tuesday. That's already bigger than his old career best opening week (first seven days) of $53.7M for his last film Inglourious Basterds which debuted on a summer Friday in 2009.

The slave Western starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, and Leonardo DiCaprio averaged a strong $10,195 from 3,010 locations making for the best average of any wide release. That is especially impressive for an R-rated film that runs nearly three hours long. Controversy related to Django's language and violence resulted in extra press coverage and more buzz and multiplexes enjoyed the benefits.

The Weinstein Co. is positioning the revenge film as both an awards contender and a commercial blockbuster and so far is succeeding on both fronts. Reviews have been very positive and the CinemaScore grade was an encouraging A-. Django Unchained already seems on track to beat the $120.5M of Basterds to become Tarantino's highest grossing film ever.

Finishing close behind in third place was the acclaimed musical Les Miserables with an estimated $28M over the Friday-to-Sunday period and a sturdy $67.4M since its Christmas launch. The Universal release averaged a terrific $9,960 from only 2,814 locations and is aiming for a long run ahead thanks to excellent word-of-mouth and upcoming awards activity including Oscar nominations and Golden Globe wins which are expected.

The Hugh Jackman-led film started off with the second best Christmas Day opening in history with $18.2M on Tuesday trailing only the $24.6M Friday of Sherlock Holmes in 2009. Compared to Django, Les Miserables has seen more erosion over the six-day launch period. But since it is based on a world-famous musical, the run was expected to have a big upfront showing of die-hard fans. Studio exit polls showed that the audience was 67% female with the overall CinemaScore being a glowing A grade.

Produced for $61M, the PG-13 film enjoyed international success too with $38.3M this weekend from only eight markets, mostly in the Pacific Rim, for a $48.7M cume and $116.2M worldwide total so far with plenty more to come. Korea accounts for nearly half of the overseas tally with a sensational $20.1M beating the opening of The Hobbit.

Opening in fourth place was the Billy Crystal-Bette Midler family comedy Parental Guidance with $14.8M and $29.6M since its Christmas Day bow. The PG-rated pic about grandparents having to care for their modern grandkids averaged a moderate $4,396 over the weekend period. With few clean options this holiday season that the whole family can enjoy together, Guidance connected with its target audience and will now try to keep it going through January when direct competition will still be light. Fox's $25M production played to a crowd that was 52% female and 55% over 25. Reviews were lousy.

Tom Cruise dropped down to fifth place with his latest action entry Jack Reacher which dipped a reasonable 10% to an estimated $14M pushing the ten-day total up to $44.7M for Paramount. Judd Apatow's new comedy This is 40 climbed up 14% from last weekend and grossed an estimated $13.2M for a ten-day take of $37.1M. The Paul Rudd-Leslie Mann pic picked up steam after Christmas once its target audience became more available, however the Universal title still sits far behind the $65.9M that Knocked Up grossed in its first ten days in 2007.

Moviegoers with extra time on their hands caught up with one of the hottest Oscar hopefuls out there, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln. The Daniel Day-Lewis starrer surged 36% from last weekend - the best jump in the top ten - and took in an estimated $7.5M bumping the cume up to a sturdy $132M for Disney. The Republican president has been cleaning up at the box office and has plenty of firepower left especially with the expected boatload of Oscar nominations coming in less than two weeks. Lincoln is now the top-grossing drama of 2012. Another older-skewing film that saw sales climb from last weekend was the Barbra Streisand comedy The Guilt Trip which banked an estimated $6.7M, up 24% from its disappointing debut. The Paramount title has collected only $21.1M in 12 days.

Animated films rounded out the top ten. Disney's 3D re-release of Monsters, Inc. shot up 33% and grossed an estimated $6.4M for $18.5M after 12 days. The Pixar hit's lifetime total now stands at $274.4M. Rival DreamWorks Animation suffered a 17% decline for its holiday adventure Rise of the Guardians which did an estimated $4.9M upping the cume to $90.2M. Studios missed out on a major opportunity by not releasing any major new toons this Christmas.

The James Bond cash cow Skyfall fell from the top ten in its eighth round, however it reached a key milestone by breaking the $1 billion barrier in worldwide box office. Sony's spy actioner captured an estimated $4.6M domestically, off a scant 2%, raising its sum to an incredible $289.6M. Overseas, Daniel Craig and company took in $10.3M boosting the hefty international tally to $710.6M and the worldwide haul to a cool $1B. In the U.K, Skyfall has become the top-grossing film of all-time and the first blockbuster ever to cross the ?100M mark.

The Weinstein Co. went fully nationwide with its awards contender Silver Linings Playbook widening the seven-week old comedy from 371 to 745 locations and made an estimated $4.1M for a $5,517 average - commendable for a film this old. The average was higher than last weekend's despite the expansion which indicates that audiences are still interested in the Bradley Cooper-Jennifer Lawrence pic regardless of the flood of other Oscar hopefuls out there. Cume to date is $27.4M.

The acclaimed Osama bin Laden manhunt pic Zero Dark Thirty suffered a 23% drop from its red hot debut last weekend which was unusual for a holiday frame when moviegoers are more available. Still, Sony's Kathryn Bigelow-directed thriller averaged a sensational $63,000 from only five theaters in New York and Los Angeles. Zero expands to more cities on Friday including San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston and goes nationwide on January 11, one day after Oscar nominations are announced.

Lacking awards buzz, Matt Damon's new film Promised Land attracted a mild debut in limited release grossing an estimated $190,150 from 25 locations for a $7,606 average. Focus plans to expand nationwide on Friday into an aggressive 1,500 theaters which will be challenging given the opening weekend performance and the fact that rival arthouse pic The Impossible - which has earned better reviews and stronger box office - also goes wide on the same day. Reviews have been mixed for Promised Land.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $159.1M which was up 18% from last year when Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol was number one with $29.4M; and up 16% from 2010 when Little Fockers remained in the top spot with $25.8M.

Experts: New shale fields to help stabilise global oil prices

Oil prices are expected to be fluctuate less in 2013, remaining on a par with or even softening slightly from 2012 levels, say energy experts.

Suthep Liumsirijarern, director-general of the Energy Policy and Planning Office, said North America's new oil shale field will come on stream next year with production of about 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent, causing crude oil imports to the US to drop.

Globally, oil demand will go up slightly from 89 million barrels per day this year to 90 million bpd.

Meanwhile, the economic crisis in Europe and the US economy will not fully recover, resulting in easing oil prices in 2013, he said.

Dubai crude is targeted to trade in a range of US$108-113 a barrel compared with an average of $109.50 this year.

In Thailand, the government's first-time car buyer scheme will drive up petrol demand by 4.9% next year to an average of 21.7 million litres a day from 20 million this year.

Diesel demand will grow by 2.6% to 57.7 million litres a day, while electricity consumption will increase by 6.13% from 161 billion megawatt-hours this year.

"We must prepare for energy-price restructuring after it has been delayed for a long time, involving liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG)," said Mr Suthep.

LPG and CNG prices have been subsidised by the state-owned Oil Fund since 2008, costing about 200 billion baht to date.

Anon Sirisaengtaksin, the chief executive of PTT Global Chemicals Plc, said the petrochemicals industry is unlikely to bottom out next year like analysts estimated since the global economy has remained slow.

Petrochemical demand will come mainly from Asia, where economies remain largely sound, according to Mr Anon.

"We have to wait until the US and European economies bounce back. Then signs [of petrochemical prices] bottoming out will emerge," he said.

Phichai Tinsuntisuk, head of the alternative energy industry club of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), said ethanol demand will grow by more than 50% from 1.2 million litres a day this year to 2 million litres a day in 2013.

Major automotive manufacturers have launched vehicles that are compatible with E85 and E20.

Meanwhile, the FTI has called on the government to proceed cautiously with the One Tambon One Power Plant scheme to ensure the success of the plan.

Under the programme, the government will introduce biomass projects for communities in remote areas by offering grants, investment privileges and project financing.

"The government should come up with good planing of this project, as local communities lack the expertise to operate power plants," said Mr Phichai.

Pasta alla puttanesca {literally whore&#39;s style pasta} - Food Recipes HQ

Post image for Pasta alla puttanesca {literally whore?s style pasta}

Back to the normal food! I could not stand the festive fatty meals anymore. It?s been a couple of days I?m avoiding sweets and choosing light meals. Today I wanted to enjoy the flavors of Italian cuisine to the fullest so I made these Spaghetti alla Puttanesca, a dish very popular in the region where I was born, Campania, in Southern Italy. Just tomatoes, capers, black olives, chilly and oregano. And pasta, usually linguine or spaghetti.

Spaghetti alla Puttanesca means whore?s style pasta, don?t ask me why,?Italians?themselves don?t know the reason. A?legend tells about brothels where, to attract customers, fast and tasty spaghetti were served to the customers. Today no one considers this name as something vulgar or bad: it?s just another?very quick, easy to prepare and full in flavour italian recipe.?You can not wrong with it, just follow the recipe for 6 persons I took from a cookbook (see image above, it is written in three langagues: italian, neapolitan, english!) and a few important steps/secrets I suggest you below:

  1. Wash the capers to wipe off the salt;
  2. Do not overcook spaghetti (cook them ?al dente?);
  3. While cooking the sauce, be careful that it does not dry out too much. If needed add the salty water where the pasta is cooking;
  4. When spaghetti are ready and well drained (do you have a colander, right?), toss them in the pan to give pasta a chance to absorb the sauce.
  5. Serve warm and enjoy it!

Former President George H.W. Bush moved out of intensive care

HOUSTON? - Former President George H.W. Bush?s condition improved enough for him to be moved on Saturday out of the intensive care unit and into a regular room at the Houston hospital where he was admitted last month for respiratory problems, a spokesman said.

Bush, 88, who served as president from 1989 to 1993, entered Methodist Hospital on Nov. 23 for treatment of what doctors said was bronchitis, and he was moved into the ICU last Sunday after suffering a number of medical complications, including a persistent fever.

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the air passages through the lungs.

?President Bush?s condition has improved, so he has been moved today from the intensive care unit to a regular patient room at the Methodist Hospital to continue his recovery,? the family said in a statement from his spokesman, Jim McGrath.

?The Bushes thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes,? it added.

McGrath said on Friday that Bush?s condition was getting better and that he was even singing at times in his communications with doctors and nurses.

He added in an email reply to Reuters on Saturday, ?George Bush is the most relentlessly upbeat man you?ll ever meet, and his spirits have been good throughout this ordeal.? He declined to disclose any information about Bush?s prognosis or how much longer he might remain hospitalized.

Bush, the 41st U.S. president and a Republican, is the father of former President George W. Bush. In a political career spanning four decades, he also served as a congressman, ambassador to the United Nations, envoy to China, CIA director, and vice president for two terms under Ronald Reagan.

Bush has lower-body parkinsonism, which causes a loss of balance, and has used a wheelchair for more than a year.

Is 32 too old to still live at home?

If you have a good job, making good money still living at home shows you fear living alone and being independent. Is your Mother indigent? Are your Father's life insurance and other death benefit not enough for your Mom to be self sustaining financially without you? If the house is too much, it's time to down size to something more affordable so she can live comfortable and you can be an independent adult.

What I see in this situation is, you being your Mom companion until she dies, which could be many, many years from now and with that you'll find yourself isolated, unmarried and no family. And then the resentment will set in and you'll find yourself a unhappy old woman.

Granted the economy has many moving back home because they can't afford housing or don't have the jobs to afford housing depending on where one lives.

You have to figure out what you want for YOUR life. You have been living your life FOR your parents - now Mom - which leaves you with no life of your own. Do you want to have a man in your life? Do you want to get married? Have children? You certainly can't do that living with Mom. Newlywed couples can't have their parents as a part of their marriage as it will cause issues. If you truly need to take care of your indigent Mother, you have her in an assisted living facility or her own apartment where you can watch over her, yet have your own space and own life.

This is what you have to figure out; what YOU want from life and when you expect to start living it too.

How To Successfully Invest In Commercial Real Estate | Investing ...

It can be difficult to find the real estate you need for beginning your business. Try reading this article.

Look around at the general environment around the building. You are ultimately responsible for disposing of environmental waste from your building. For example, do you want to buy a property that lies in a flood zone? Think long and hard before continuing on that path. Try contacting local environmental agencies that can give you important information regarding the area you?re thinking about buying a property in.

Find out how the company that you are considering accounts for results. For example, it may be useful to know about how required space is calculated, key factors for evaluation and the mechanisms of different methods of negotiation. You can benefit a lot if you know things like this.

Before you begin searching the market for a new property, outline what you need. Write down the features of a piece of property that are the most essential to you, such as how many square feet it must be and the number of specific rooms it should have, including conference rooms, offices, and restrooms.

This is important because you want to ensure that the terms line up with the pro forma and the rent roll. If you concentrate on these points, you can find an issue with the property.

Put a high priority on emergency maintenance needs. Find out from your landlord who to contact for emergency repairs, such as plumbing accidents. Have their phone number handy and know how long it will take them to arrive in an emergency. Take advantage of this information to devise a contingency plan in order to prevent and respond to customer complaints resulting from maintenance issues.

When purchasing commercial real estate, start by knowing your goals for the property. Do you want to start your own business there or do you want to lease the space? You should sit down and make specific and straightforward goals for your commercial property, as it will save you time and effort.

You probably do not want to sign a lease form that is standard when you are leasing a commercial piece of real estate. Big real estate companies will sometimes slip additional covenants or requirements into the lease document, which can at times be very long. Standard commercial leases may be full of such clauses, so it?s important that you actually read the document before signing.

Have your property inspected before you list it for sale. If they find anything wrong with the property, you should have it fixed immediately.

If you are investing in real estate, consider going big. Managing five units might seem far less complicated than fifty, but the work that you put into financing and setting up lease agreements will be the same no matter how many units you manage. Regardless of the size of the building, you will need commercial financing. However, you will be able to obtain a much better per unit deal on a larger building.

Build your reputation by creating a blog to share real estate tips with others on the Internet. This can, in turn, increase the exposure of the property you are selling or leasing.

Watch for motivated sellers. You have to look for them, especially those who need to sell below the market value. Unless you find a deal in real estate, nothing is going to happen, and close on the heels of that deal you?ll usually find a motivated seller.

Dual Agency

Always go through the disclosures of an agent before hiring him or her. Be aware of the possibility of dual agency. In a dual agency the Realtor represents both parties of the transaction. This means that the agent is representing the interests of the lessor and lessee simultaneously. Dual agency is something that should always get disclosure, and both parties involved should be in agreement with it.

Now that you have read this article, you should be more confident in your understanding of basic commercial real estate transactions. Take what you?ve learned here to heart, and continue to learn as much as you can about the real estate market.

How can you keep up with all the news about click this over here now? It?s wise to learn the proper information first. Fortunately for you, this article was loaded with top-notch info. Read through it several times to have a great head start.

Author Provides a Way for Anyone to Use 2D Bar Codes Creatively ...

Huntington, NY, December 27, 2012 ?(PR.com)? In his new book, author R. Henry Thomas outlines a myriad of creative applications using readily available "2D" bar coding systems working in concert with Smart phones or Computer Tablets to construct new ideas for business promotions, product introductions, enhancements and social networking.

Today you can't help notice more and more of these little square codes popping up all over. When you shop, they help you pay for goods and services. In addition, they quickly help you check for prices, review specifications, find service outlets or can take you on a video tour of potentially your next car, boat or home, Thomas notes. You may even dial phone numbers, view websites or go right to Facebook pages by just scanning your easily created and then printed "two dimensional" codes. Most people can do this within minutes of reading my book and even customize their background images with vibrant color or photographs, he added.

These squiggly squares often referred to as "Quick Response Codes" or "Microsoft Tags" are now being used daily in nearly all types of transactions and are inherently adaptable to a wide variety of known and undiscovered applications. This book provides the reader with background on how ?Bar Codes" came into existence and takes the mystery out of them, Thomas says. It also details information on different auto identification approaches, scanning applications and providers. The publication graphically illustrates how many are being used today and how they can be molded to fit social or business applications for use tomorrow, Thomas added.

His book will also provide the reader with some interesting and entertaining personal experiences regarding "high technology?, its history and will attempt to expand their overall knowledge of bar coding and scanning methodologies.

Mr. Thomas, who holds an MBA from Farleigh Dickinson University, has extensive experience in the auto identification, biometric, credentialing and computer systems industries. He believes his book can be the key for professional entrepreneurs and small business people seeking to use this relatively free bar code technology to enhance their company's profitability, expansion and create a differential advantage. It can also permit students to learn how to create many personalized items right at home, such as name tags, item tags with unique message content, T-shirts and even costume jewelry.

Yen falls, Nikkei surges as Japan gets a new government

TOKYO (Reuters) - The yen fell to a 20-month low against the dollar on Wednesday, buoying the benchmark Nikkei stock average to nine-month highs, as Japan swore in a new prime minister eager to pursue drastic stimulus steps to drive the country's economy out of deflation.

Asian shares and other assets were capped in thin holiday trade, with investors focusing on the fate of U.S. negotiations to avert a budget crunch looming at the end of the year.

Markets in Singapore <.ftsti>, Malaysia <.klse>, Indonesia <.jkse>, the Philippines <.psi> and South Korea <.ks11> reopened on Wednesday after closing on Tuesday for the Christmas holiday.

Hong Kong and Australia remain closed on Wednesday. Europe also will not trade, but U.S. markets reopen later in the day.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> was little changed. Shanghai shares <.ssec> were flat, but stayed in positive territory on the year after a 2.5 percent jump on Tuesday erased 2012 losses. It is set for a first annual gain in three years. South Korean shares <.ks11> ended nearly flat.

Shinzo Abe, whose party won a landslide victory in an election earlier this month, was elected Japan's premier on Wednesday. Abe, who is expected to appoint his cabinet later Wednesday, is calling for a mix of aggressive monetary policy easing and big fiscal spending to beat deflation and rein in the strong yen.

He has kept up pressure on the Bank of Japan to be more drastic and adopt a 2 percent inflation target to beat deep-rooted deflation, pushing the yen to a 20-month low of 85.38 yen on trading platform EBS on Wednesday. Traders eyed the dollar's 2011 high of 85.53 yen as the next target.

The euro rose as high as 112.55 yen on EBS, just below its 16-month high of 112.59 yen hit on December 19.

The weaker yen has bolstered hopes for better earnings from Japanese companies and underpinned the Nikkei, which has gained some 18 percent since mid-November when the election was scheduled, fuelling expectations for Abe's party to win. The yen has lost nearly 8 percent against the dollar in the same period.

The Nikkei <.n225> closed at a nine-month high with a 1.5 percent gain. <.t/>

"Most foreign funds have added Japanese shares and there are fewer participants today, but there still is a reason for the Nikkei to rise," said Hideyuki Okoshi, general manager at Chibagin Securities. "Not only exporters but investors are buying other stocks which could benefit under the new government."

Japanese government debt prices fell, with the 10-year bond futures hitting a three-month low of 143.65 in active trade. Ten-year JGB yields rose 1.5 basis points to 0.780 percent, matching a six-week high hit on December 19.

"We continue to see equities going high, so the pressure is on the long end of the JGB curve. For the short end of the curve, we continue to see the BOJ ease aggressively, so there is no change in that," said Tadashi Matsukawa, head of Japan fixed income at PineBridge Investments.

Minutes of the BOJ's policy-setting meeting in November, released on Wednesday, showed that some board members said the central bank must act decisively, without ruling out any policy options, if the outlook for the economy and prices worsens further.

"FISCAL CLIFF" RISK

The dollar was expected to stay firm this week as the U.S. fiscal impasse is likely to continue to sap investor appetite for risky assets and raise the dollar's safe-haven appeal.

Ten-year U.S. Treasury notes held steady in price to yield roughly 1.776 percent in Asia, little changed from late U.S. trade on Monday. The U.S. bond market was closed on Tuesday for Christmas.

"I think there is about a 50 percent chance of the cliff being avoided at the year-end through an agreement of some kind, even if it turns out to be just a short-term postponement," said Tomoaki Shishido, a rate analyst for Nomura Securities in Tokyo.

A U.S. official said on Tuesday that President Barack Obama may return to Washington from his Hawaiian holiday as early as Wednesday evening to address the unfinished negotiations over the "fiscal cliff" of some $600 billion in automatic spending cuts and tax increases set to start on January 1.

If the United States falls off the fiscal cliff, economists warn that the world's largest economy could plunge into recession and drag global economies down as well.

Data out of Asia on Wednesday underscored fragile global growth.

Exports in Thailand, Southeast Asia's second-largest economy, rose nearly 27 percent in November from a year ago, but that reflected recovery from flooding in late 2011 and not growth in global demand.

South Korea's key consumer sentiment index held steady in December from November and stood below the neutral point for a fifth consecutive month, diminishing hopes of a quick economic rebound.

Gold edged lower on Wednesday on uncertainty over the fiscal cliff, but a weaker yen sparked a rally in bullion futures on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM).

Brent crude climbed above $109 per barrel on Wednesday in thin trade, with investors hoping for a last-minute deal to avoid a U.S. fiscal crisis. U.S. crude futures also inched up 0.4 percent to $88.94.

98% Brooklyn Castle

All Critics (45) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (44) | Rotten (1)

"Brooklyn Castle" easily checkmates your inner cynic.

Katie Dellamaggiore's lively and affecting documentary introduces us to a cast of characters that's very winning (in both senses of the word).

It's not To Sir, With Love: It's fierce ambition, the channeling of emotion, and hours of drilling.

Enlightening, inspiring and expertly crafted.

An irresistibly uplifting doc.

Castle is suspenseful, funny and, particularly in its depiction of the challenging home lives of some of the kids, moving.

... a powerful and positive story about dedicated teachers helping kids succeed no matter what their circumstances

Like chess, not exactly a high-energy experience but seeing what these kids accomplish, seemingly against all odds is breathtaking all the same.

...provides a corrective to the popular image of American schools as obsessed with sports and popularity, and it makes the strongest possible case for funding after-school activities.

Chess, brilliant young students and great teachers potent mix.

The I.S. 318 team? A delightfully motley, vulnerable, multicultural bunch, whose addiction to chess has allowed them higher aspirations for top high schools and, eventually, college and careers. You will root for them like crazy.

We meet five of the team's members and several of their teachers; by its end, you'll be rooting for them all.

"BROOKLYN CASTLE is a compelling, engaging and inspiring Documentary, featuring Junior High kids that you can relate to. Even if you don't know the game of Chess all too well, it won't stop you from enjoying this pleasant film."

Brooklyn Castle provides a snapshot of indomitable American can-do attitude, and gives one hope.

The admirable Brooklyn Castle transcends its formula to become an optimistic look at extracurricular education and young people.

Great story, well-made, what's not to like?

It's clear that chess isn't just a game; for these students, it can also open doors.

4 Reasons to Integrate Marketing Now | Geoff Livingston&#39;s Blog

Two rivers converge

Marketers need to harness media convergence and integrate to maximize the impact of their various communications, on and offline.

Convergence has been brought about by the arrival of mobile and social media. The combination has empowered customers to access the Internet anywhere and discuss it.

The resulting anytime anywhere access to the Internet breaks the isolation of any one type of media form, including radio ads in the car and newspapers in a local subway.

Convergence creates the need to integrate, the process in which all communications from a company or organization ? regardless of form ? work together to present a unified brand experience for a customer. Integration yields more leads, creating better ROI for marketers. It includes cross promotion of ideas, themes, and calls to action, including participation in social media.

A recent CMO Council study showed that only 9% of respondents believe their interactive marketing efforts are highly evolved and integrated. This online integration issue doesn?t even consider integrating marketers? efforts in the traditional advertising, public relations and direct marketing disciplines.

Gini Dietrich and I addressed why and how marketers must integrate in our recent book Marketing in the Round. These four reasons show why business owners and lead marketers should address marketing integration today:

1) 3000 Messages

Red Silk

The most important reason of all, customers passively receive an average of 3000 branded messages a day through a wide variety of diverse media.

This astounding statistic should tell every business owner and marketer one thing: A siloed communication targeted toward an unexpecting or unwilling customer will likely ?bounce? off their consciousness.

What makes your status update, print ad, press release, Tumblr post, trade story mention, or other outreach stand out from the other 3000 messages?

You can rely on breakthrough creative, but most marketers don?t shoot silver bullets with every communication.

Through integration, impressions develop a branded thread that with repetition begins to stand out from other messages. When a need makes a brand relevant, your integrated marketing effort stands a much greater chance of coming to mind.

2) Convergence of Content, Search and Social

Triangle quilt (opus XII)

Experienced online marketers know there is no avoiding integrating content, search and social for a complete Internet strategy. They are irrevocably tied together, and increasingly so with Google, Bing and other search engines focused on adding social context to search.

Inbound marketing and lead nurturing demands seamless intertwining of the three disciplines.

Social is how customers hear about you, search is how they find you, and content is how they qualify you. None of them alone are strong enough to succeed, but together organizations can deploy knock-out online marketing strategies.

Alone, unoptimized content ? while it may be good ? is not found. Search optimization may drive traffic but without great content people will bounce and leave. Similarly, social may drive attention and traffic, but if your content is not relevant (a la inbound marketing principles) or searchable, it loses opportunities.

That?s why it?s so important to build every aspect of an online presence with a combined view of customer interests and relevant topics, search optimization via balanced keyword methodologies, and social optimization. It?s how leads are built.

3) Online Conversations Start with Traditional Media

Studies have shown that the most shared stories within social networks come from tradition media.

That means traditional public relations tactics media relations and events have a direct impact on driving traffic to your online content and social media strategies. Further, search algorithms index news stories as critical sources of content.

A customer will see the media as a credible proof point for your product/service category, and social, search and content can then create bridges to your web site.

Make sure content and social reflect the general trends media covers in relation to your company. Then whether through social or search, you can generate new inbound leads by integrating across public relations.

The same could be said for a successful advertising campaign. Consider how many broadcast ads live extended lives on YouTube. Does your content and social reinforce the messages of your advertising?

4) Direct Brings Home the Bacon

54 Percent of All Ad Expenditures in 2010 Were Spent on Direct Marketing

More marketing dollars are being invested in direct tactics like email marketing, direct mail, search, and more first. That?s because the direct marketing approach yields the most ROI at a 10:1 ratio, according to the Direct Marketing Association (DMA).

Break that direct expenditure further into the online spend. More than half of expenditures (54 percent) in Internet marketing go to online pay-per-click search in 2011, says the DMA.

Inbound marketing closes with customized dynamic online calls-to-action and emails. But even a letter or an old fashioned mailer can achieve the same result.

To maximize impact, that final close needs to feel, sound and act like the general messages that brought your customer to the door. Integrating creative and topical themes only helps direct close the deal.

Childhood Obesity, Celebrities, and Eating Disorders (Part 1)

Beyonce

Consider the strange case of Beyonc?, who seems to be working both sides of the street in the childhood obesity neighborhood. Early in 2011, the world learned that the singing star, following in the footsteps of other celebrities like Jamie Oliver and Ellen DeGeneres, would lend her talents to the cause of quelling childhood obesity and averting a public health crisis. First Lady Michelle Obama appreciated the help for her ?Let?s Move!? campaign, and of course Beyonc??s song ?Move Your Body? fit right in.

Designed to be played in middle schools, the singer?s exercise demonstration video featured an already existing song, rewritten for this project. Neon Limelight called it ?an energetic track urging folks to get up and shake what their mama gave them to keep the pounds off.?

As journalist Melanie Warner noted, ?the singer Beyonc? chomps on an apple (while dancing!)? and although she didn?t say it, what this reader inferred is that it might be a good way to choke to death. But maybe that isn?t what Warner meant, although she doesn?t think celebrities who aspire to be role models should ever represent junk food or sugar-sweetened beverages. Warner writes:

Kids old enough to remember will also recall something else Beyonc? told them to do ? drink Pepsi. That was in 2002 and 2003 when the pop star was a Pepsi (PEP) spokesperson, appearing in multiple TV ads, like this one where she sings about the ?joy of Pepsi.?

Although the ?Move Your Body? video wasn?t scheduled to premier until May, there was plenty of advance press, not all of it favorable. Mikaela Conley of ABC News pointed out that Beyonc? danced in her ?signature stilettos,? and although she didn?t say it, what this reader inferred is that it might be a good way to break an ankle. In fact, wearing high heels for plain old everyday walking, and not even for dancing, has long been discouraged by orthopedic surgeons and podiatrists. The distortion forced upon the rest of the body by high heels does not offer the body a single benefit.

And this was not the only objection. The prominent physician David L. Katz went on record as doubting the usefulness of celebrity participation because it can have unintended consequences.

Conley spoke with Dr. Jennifer Helmcamp of Scott & White Hospital in Austin, TX, who is both a pediatrician and an obesity expert. Dr. Helmcamp places much more credence in the importance of parental influence, believing that children will pretty much do what they see their parents do, including indulging in very detrimental eating habits. She was quoted as saying:

Celebrity campaigns primarily increase awareness? Michelle Obama has modeled behaviors such as planting gardens, exercising and talks about what she does at home to keep her kids healthy. Adding someone like Beyonc? to the campaign is great because she is a very visible influence on older children and teens.

Yes, and by shilling for a soft drink, what behavior is the influential Beyonc? modeling? Like Dr. Katz, Dr. Wendy Oliver-Pyatt also expressed ambivalence about the celebrity connection, and mentioned the sometimes unexpected results that can stem from good intentions. She is uncomfortable with the whole notion of labeling kids as overweight or obese, and for a very definite reason:

We only want to do intervention on modifiable behavior and weight is not a modifiable behavior.

Right, because weight is not a behavior at all. A behavior is something that a person does, like comfort eating, and that is modifiable.

(to be continued? )

Egypt election panel: Morsi constitution wins by 2-1

Ahmed Abd El Latef / AP

Egyptian women cut their hair to protest against the Islamist-oriented constitution during a demonstration in Tahrir Square, Cairo, Egypt, Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012.

By Maria Golovnina, REUTERS

CAIRO - Egypt announced on Tuesday voters had approved overwhelmingly a constitution drafted by President Mohamed Morsi's Islamist allies, and the government imposed currency restrictions to cope with an economic crisis worsened by weeks of unrest.?

Final figures from the elections commission showed the constitution was adopted with 63.8 percent of the vote, giving Islamists their third straight victory at the polls since strongman Hosni Mubarak was toppled in a 2011 revolution.?

Morsi's Leftist, liberal, secularist and Christian opponents had taken to the streets to block what they argued was a move to ram through a charter that would dangerously mix politics and religion.?

The president argues that the new constitution offers sufficient protection for minorities, and adopting it quickly is necessary to end two years of turmoil and political uncertainty that has wrecked the economy.?

Hours before the vote result was announced, the authorities imposed a new ban on travelling in or out of the country with more than $10,000 in foreign currency, a move apparently intended to halt capital flight.?

Some Egyptians have begun withdrawing their savings from banks in fear of tougher restrictions.?

The "yes" vote paves the way for a parliamentary election in about two months, setting the stage for yet another electoral battle between surging Islamists and their fractious liberal and leftist opponents.?

The final result, announced by the election commission, matched --?to the last decimal place -- an earlier unofficial tally announced by Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood.?

The constitution was drawn up by a body largely made up of Morsi's Islamist allies. The results announcement was a disappointment for the opposition which had put pressure on the authorities to recount the result to reflect what they have described as major vote violations.?

"We have seriously investigated all the complaints," judge Samir Abu el-Matti of the Supreme Election Committee told a news conference. The final official turnout was 32.9 percent.?

Cairo, gripped by often violent protests in the run-up to the vote, appeared calm after the announcement and opposition groups have announced no plans for demonstrations to mark the result.?

"The results was so odd and no change in the percentage points shows that nothing was done to take our complaints into account," Khaled Dawood, an opposition spokesman, said.?

The referendum, held on December 15 and on December 22, has sown deep divisions in the Arab world's most populous nation but Morsi says enacting the new constitution quickly will bring stability and a chance to focus on fixing the economy.?

A growing sense of crisis has gripped Egypt's polarized society for weeks. Standard and Poor's cut Egypt's long-term credit rating on Monday.?

Hours ahead of the results announcement, Prime Minister Hisham Kandil told the nation of 83 million the government was committed to taking steps to heal the economy.?

"The main goals that the government is working towards now is plugging the budget deficit, and working on increasing growth to boost employment rates, curb inflation, and increase the competitiveness of Egyptian exports," he said.?

Nasser Nasser / AP file

An Egyptian election worker shows his colleagues an invalid ballot while counting ballots at the end of the second round of a referendum on a disputed constitution in this Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 file photo.

CRISIS MODE?

The central bank said on Monday it would take steps to "safeguard" bank deposits, without giving any details. Rumors are rife of what sort of measures are planned.?

"I have been hearing that the central bank is going to take over all our bank deposits to pay wages for government employees given the current deteriorating economic situation," said Ayman Osama, father of two young children.?

He said he had taken out the equivalent of about $16,000 from his account this week and planned to withdraw more, adding that he had also told his wife to buy more gold jewellery.?

"I am not going to put any more money in the bank and neither will many of the people I know," he said.?

The referendum is the Islamists' third electoral victory since the fall of Mubarak, following parliamentary and presidential elections, representing a decisive shift in a country at the heart of the Arab world, where Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood was suppressed for generations by military rulers.?

However, secularist and liberal opposition members hope they can organize better in time for the next parliamentary vote.?

The opposition says the constitution fails to guarantee personal freedoms and rights for women and minorities. The government says the criticism is misplaced.?

Hossam El-Din Ali, a 35-year-old newspaper vendor in central Cairo, said he agreed the new constitution would help bring some political stability but like many others he feared the possible economic austerity measures lying ahead.?

"People don't want higher prices. People are upset about this," he said. "There is recession, things are not moving. But I am wishing for the best, God willing."?
