Pam Grout: Imagine If Justin Bieber's Fans Redirected Their Passion

If only we could channel the passion of Justin Bieber's fans into something useful. Not that there's anything wrong with the 18-year-old Canadian's R&B music. But just think what these 13- to 19-year-old girls could accomplish if they turned the sheer energy of their Bieber lust onto a world problem. We'd have no poverty, no hunger, no disparity of any kind.

The lengths to which these nubile young Beliebers, as they're called, go to proclaim their love for the moptop star could move mountains. At London's Royal Garden hotel, a posh hotel overlooking Kensington Palace, Hyde Park and St. Paul's Cathedral, thousands of young fans camped out, skipping school, starving themselves to keep their place in the Bieber viewing queue.

Even though the ritzy hotel is pedigreed in hosting stars from Sonny and Cher and the Monkees to the London Rugby team, Biebster's fans and their 2,000-plus phone calls (claiming to be everyone from his long lost cousin to his personal stripper) jammed the phone lines, forcing the five-star hotel to change its phone number. That unbridled passion could be used to insure health care for all Americans, something their Canadian crush has consistently applauded.

At another London hotel a few years ago, a couple enterprising Beliebers snuck inside the employees's entrance and pirated a couple maid's uniforms before they were nabbed dutifully snapping pictures inside the Paul McCartney suite at Liverpool's Hard Days Night hotel where their idol was staying. Again, if that persistence was used to feed the hungry or stop the Syrian government's bombing of innocent neighborhoods, the world would be a much nicer place.

The more than 300,000 screaming, purple-wearing (allegedly his favorite color) tweens who stood in the rain for the pop star's June 11 Mexico City concert could have easily moved their ardor to Los Cabos's G-20 Summit a week later and put some genuine teeth in the "tax and entitlement reform" act.

Mr. Bieber, I would love you, too, if you could just get the ardor of your 20 million twitter fans pointed in a more productive direction.

Obesity?5 Super Smart Strategies to Slim Down

Obesity is not the stage where all hopes are dashed, but rather the beginning of self-nurturing and taking extreme care of you by being selfish. Yes, I said it. This may be the only time when you are asked to think only of you.

So what am I getting at here? First, no one sets out to be obese, yet statistics tell us that the numbers of persons carrying excessive fat on their frames are rising steadily and have now reached epidemic proportions.

To slim down will not involve quick fixes. Obesity is a challenge that will require lots of personal effort and self-preserving strategies to work. You may need to block out negative comments from friends and families who believe you can?t lose the weight.

The new way forward will include your personal commitment, meal plans, and exercise activities that further your goal of slimming down.

The focus is on you and your health. ?

5 Super Smart Strategies to Slim Down

1:? Reduce cravings
How do you stop cravings? Most cravings are for sweets and simple carbohydrates, which are addictive foods. The reason they cause this yearning, is not just the taste, but also because of the fact that they are digested so quickly in the body, without providing satiety or fullness. Therefore, you are left feeling unsatisfied, wanting more and repeating the cycle. You are therefore, more likely to overeat, a problem that eventually leads down the road to obesity.

Remove all white grain products, such as: white rice, white bread, chips, sweet treats, chocolate and salty crisps, which all cause bloating and pack on the pounds. Cutting down or cutting out these foods will make a difference to your vitality and weight control.

Choose instead a variety of salads, such as carrot or celery sticks with a hummus dip, or source healthy recipes online to increase your menu options.

2.? Become intimate with your food
Know how many calories are in the foods you are eating and what amount is the recommended intake for your height, weight, age, activity level, and gender. Your dietician or health care provider can best assist you with this information. Experts recommend that weight loss should be gradual at the rate of 0.5 ? 2 pounds per week, after the initial few weeks when larger amounts are possible.

Cereals (non-sugary types) can vary between 100 ? 300 calories without the addition of milk. Get acquainted with the calories in your food, including which ones provide you with more nutrition over another, making the best selections that will maximise your weight loss.

3:? Capitalise on your daily activities
Turn routine activities into mini workouts. Household chores can give you a workout if you put effort into it. For example, if you are sweeping the floor: simply tighten your abdominals while using brisker arm movements. Get your legs workings also, perform mini squats to reach under difficult areas of the home.

Be creative! If you are going to tackle obesity, keep moving. Take the stairs when possible, schedule long brisk walks into your day, and perform leg stretches while standing or sitting. Make use of opportunities to elevate your heart rate until you can perform 30 minutes of steady aerobic exercise.
?
4:? Find a symbol for your slim down goal
To fight obesity, you need to stay motivated; find an appealing visual that will keep you focused on your weight loss goal. It could be a picture of your ideal weight, an outfit, or a place that you would like to be when you change to a slimmer body.

Visuals help to solidify the reasons for your sacrifice and will become your personal honour reward.

5.? Not looking back
Be keenly aware of your body. Notice the changes in weight loss, how you fit into your clothes, and whether aspects of your diet need adjusting.? Become aware of negative thoughts that may creep into your consciousness which creates doubt or the feeling of wanting to give up. These feelings can sabotage your weight loss goals. Journalise or write down the reasons why you need to accomplish your goal.

When you start to take extreme care of yourself, you don?t look back; you do what is necessary to restore your life to a normal healthy one. In this way your life will take on a whole new meaning. Your self-esteem will soar, your energy levels will rise, and more people will want to be around you. Most importantly your health will improve and begin to return to normal; aches and pains will begin to disappear; your cardiovascular system will strengthen, oxygen efficiency, digestion and circulation will recover. You will be happier and calmer, more focused and wise.

JBL details his experience climbing Mt. Elbrus

I had three goals in trying to climb the highest mountain in Europe, 18,511-feet high Mt. Elbrus. (PHOTOS?| PAST UPDATES)

I wanted to raise money for the kids I work with daily in Bermuda (Beyond Rugby Bermuda), I wanted to plant a WWE flag on the summit and I wanted to not die. I accomplished two out of the three. (WATCH: JBL AFTER THE CLIMB)

I have worked with WWE since December 1995 and because of them I have been able to do some wonderful things. I have been to the war zones of the Middle East eight different times and was part of the first civilian group to visit Afghanistan shortly after war started. I was with WWE when we went down, as one of first groups to do so, to thank the heroes that were still saving lives in the burning rubble at Ground Zero. I was with WWE when we were the first mass gathering just two days after 9/11 in one of the most emotional events I have ever been part of in a sold out arena in Houston. From Make-A-Wish to literacy programs to an anti-bullying campaign, WWE has gone way beyond what companies would dream to do to make the world a better place.

So, when I decided to climb the Seven Summits (highest mountain on each continent) and do it to raise money for kids I work with daily in Bermuda that are deemed ?at risk? by society, I knew I wanted to partner with my family again in WWE.

I?m 45 years old and have had a broken back, four knee surgeries and two herniated discs, so I knew this would not be easy. But, we tell our kids daily that everyone has problems, it?s what you do with what you have that matters. I wasn?t just raising money for the kids; I was doing my best to set an example. We all have mountains to climb, mine ahead of me were just literal.

I trained for more than half a year for Mt. Elbrus. I had gotten to where I would do a stair master up to three hours straight and when in New York City, climb up to 400 flights of stairs in my apartment building (which took 3 1/2 hours). I had gotten up to 18 miles hiking around Bermuda. I can?t run due to my injuries so I would walk the 18 miles, taking about 4 1/2 hours.

I trained walking with a backpack for several hours straight many times a week.

This was not a ?Hollywood? production; this was something I put the time and effort in to accomplish, exactly what we tell our kids they must do to be successful.

My plan was, and is, to climb the Seven Summits over the next two years, and Mt. Elbrus was first on the list. (WATCH: JBL PREPARES FOR THE CLIMB)

After flying through Moscow and St. Petersburg doing the normal tourist visits of Lenin, Red Square and the Hermitage while still training for what was to come, we arrived in the Baksan Valley which is located just north of Georgia and next to Chechnya. The valley was closed the year before due to the conflicts, and I was hoping that another conflict would wait till I had left.

We immediately started to acclimatize, which involved up to 10 hours of climbing at altitude. George Mallory had first developed this when trying to summit Mt. Everest in the 1920s. You hike higher to an altitude and then return to increase the red blood cell count in your body so your body can absorb more oxygen; though, this also raises the risk of heart attack.

Climbing for hour after hour straight up is hard; doing it with half the oxygen is indescribable. It?s like climbing stairs for hours with a plastic bag over your head, your heart beats so fast you can feel it racing very loudly in your head and you never really get your breath.

I got my first dose of mountain medicine on one of these hikes. I had gotten terrible blisters and one of the climbers who had just returned from Mt. Everest, Dr. Mark Schwab (the best climber on the mountain), gave me duct tape off of his climbing pole to wrap my foot, which I did.

A pair of companies doing business in Erie are celebrating honors from J.D. Power and Associates.

Erie Insurance Group, based in Erie, and Northwest Savings Bank, which has its headquarters in Warren, both have been recognized for customer satisfaction by J.D. Power, a global marketing information services company.

Erie Insurance outperformed 10 other insurance companies to rank No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic region in customer satisfaction, J. D. Power announced Monday afternoon.

The ratings are based on customer satisfaction with price, policy offerings, billing, payment and claims.

In this region, Erie Insurance took top honors, followed by State Farm, Nationwide, Travelers and Progressive.

Geico, known for its lizard-led advertising, ranked seventh.

Meanwhile, employees at Northwest Savings Bank will be taking to the streets in Warren today to celebrate the arrival of the trophy marking the bank's third consecutive win for customer satisfaction in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Fruitful matchmaking: Baltic Business Arena is a stepstone to new ...

- I wish there would be more events like this. Especially in the field of clean tech, says Andrzej Kr?l, CEO in Nordpolhaus, one of the SME?s and trade organisations represented at BBA 2012.

It is the first time that SME?s had the opportunity to book face-to-face meetings with other companies at a BDF Summit, but not the last, hopes Andrzej Kr?l. His Krakow-based company is currently exporting its wood frame houses mainly to Norway. He hopes BBA will prove a shortcut to other markets.

?

Perfect mix

The Polish CEO just finished a meeting with Mikael H?kansson from the non-profit organisation European Minds ? a meeting that might prove fruitful Mr. H?kansson says. His office is currently involved in a mining project in Northern Sweden that requires construction of housing for a total 12.000 mine workers.

European Minds is a consulting company offering support in developing EU strategies, EU applications, transnational projects and partnerships.
- We are here to broaden our network to include more first of all authorities but also companies in the Baltic Sea Region, Mikael H?kansson explains.

While he is focusing on the Baltic Business Arena some of his colleagues are covering the political sessions and workshops at the summit. For Mikael H?kansson the whole event constitutes the perfect mix of politics and business.

Business and regional development

Dorota Isajuk also represents a non-profit organisation. She is advisor in the BISNEP (Business and Innovation Support for North-East Poland), addressing the challenges faced by SME?s in the Bia?ystok region in North-West Poland. The Bia?ystok region is one of the poorest regions in Poland and Ms. Isajuk sees events as BBA as a means of boosting economic growth in the region by providing local companies with partners and customers in the Baltic Sea Region.

At BBA Dorota Isajuk has set up meetings with other non-profit organisations, but also companies. She attends networking conferences regularly but is impressed by the BBA event and Swedish innovation company ALMI handling the logistics at Baltic Business Arena.

Stepstone

Artis Treimanis is impressed too. The 21-year-old entrepreneur is representing the small Latvian enterprise Svecu Darbnica specializing in candle making kits.
- I had really good meetings at the Business Arena and a lot of new ideas, Tremanis says.
It is the first time he is attending a matchmaking event and he hopes Baltic Business Arena can become a stepstone on the five employee Ventspils-based company?s road to the Scandinavian markets.
- I guess I represent the smallest company at the business arena. This year, Artis Treimanis emphasizes with an optimistic smile.

BBA 2012 was set up on the initiative of Swedish Agency of Economic and Regional Growth (Tillv?xtverket) which is also main sponsor of the event and strategic partner of BDF. The Agency has asked ALMI (Swedish business development organization) and BDF to arrange BBA 2012. Co-sponsors were Enterprise Europe Network, Swedish Institute and BDF.

Activities of BBA 2012 were:

  • Business-to-business meetings
  • Brief thematic seminars presenting topics related to everyday business conditions.

Most participants were SME?s but also business development organizations, legal advisers, innovation agents etc. They came from eight BSR countries: Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden.

The first BBA was set up in Stockholm in 2011 when 70 companies from 11 countries performed over 350 meetings.

Karin Hallerby, Head of Dept. at Swedish Agency of Economic and Regional Growth (Tillv?xtverket): ?The Baltic Sea Region offers attractive market opportunities for many SME?s. A developed cooperation between SME?s will further strenghten the competitiveness of the region?

?The Baltic Sea Region is performing well in Europe regarding growth and competitiveness?, adds BDF Chairman Hans Skov Christensen. ?Our business structure is dominated by SME?s and dynamic entrepreneurs. Their engagement in establishing new contacts and business opportunities across the Baltic Sea is crucial for the further development of our region?, he emphasizes.

?The best way to exploit and develop cooperation opportunities is to establish personal contacts. In a globalized, digitalized world we are still dependent on personal contacts to take the first step?.

?Especially within green growth this region has global top competences, not least due to traditions of public-private cooperation. BDF is established to facilitate such co-operations? says Torben Aaberg, Head of Public Affairs and BDF?s coordinator of BBA 2012. ?This year we have been very pleased with the close cooperation with ALMI and Tillv?xtverket, the latter being one of our most important Swedish partners. We hope that we together can continue and further develop Baltic Business Arena as an annual event?.

  • BBA 2012 was initiated ? and mainly sponsored by ? Swedish Agency of Economic and Regional Growth (Tillv?xtverket) and arranged by ALMI and BDF. Co-sponsors: Enterprise Europe Network, Swedish Institute and BDF.
  • The following contributed to the content of BBA 2012: Magnusson Law Firm, GlobeEight, SKOK Poland, Danish Trade Council, Vaeksthus Greater Copenhagen
  • The following partners co-operated with BDF in recruiting participants for the event: Confederation of Danish Industry, Fehmarn Belt Business Council, Kaliningrad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Union of Baltic Cities Business Commission

Future-Predicting Phones Will Speed Up App Launches [Phones]

Even with a fancy A5 processor or who-knows-how-many-core Snapdragon chip, smart phones sometimes can't quite keep up and apps take far longer to load than we'd really like. A team of engineers, however, is building software that predicts the future in order to speed things up. More »

Google Nexus Q streaming player unveiled

4 hrs.

Google Wednesday introduced what it describes as the "first social streaming device of its kind" with the Nexus Q, which streams your music and entertainment from the cloud to your home, or even to your friends who also have Android phones or tablets.

"It's the first device that lets you create social playlists with your friends," the company said in a video shown on YouTube (shared?below).

The spherical, glowing?Q has the guts of an Android phone and near-field communication to sync with phones nearby. It also has a Micro-USB port. It can?connect to your TV and your stereo system, or run its own speakers with a built-in?amplifier. (Reminds me just a?bit of the orb in Woody Allen's "Sleeper" ??but that was used for something else.)

The Nexus Q will work in concert with Google's app store, now called Google Play, "play it all on the biggest speakers and screen in the house. There are no downloads, no syncing, no running out of space," the company says. Google Play now sells movies and TV episodes (as well as seasons).

The player will cost $299. You can pre-order it now, and it will start shipping in July. Google will also sell a pair of Triad bookshelf speakers for $399 that will work with the Nexus Q.?

Screenwriter Nora Ephron Is 'Gravely Ill'

'When Harry Met Sally ... ' and 'Sleepless In Seattle' writer is not expected to survive the night, TMZ reports.
By Josh Wigler

Nora Ephron, the writer of iconic romantic comedies "When Harry Met Sally ... " and "Sleepless in Seattle" among other hit films, is reportedly "gravely ill" and "not expected to make it through the night."

TMZ reports that family members are currently telling close friends of the writer/director "there is little hope that [Ephron] will recover from her current condition." The nature of her illness is not currently known, though it's been reported that Ephron is suffering from leukemia.

Word of Ephron's condition first hit the Internet on Tuesday (June 26) by way of an article published by journalist Liz Smith, a close friend of the legendary Hollywood screenwriter. In the column, Smith writes about Ephron as though she has already passed away, praising her friend's "grave" and "unexpected" humor.

"She never gave the answer I expected to anything. She was grave in her humor, which made it deadly, unexpected, truly funny and dauntingly intelligent," wrote Smith. "She seemed never to want or expect anything, while always demanding the best from the rest of us. She was — always — right and somehow left the smartest, most ambitious and silliest of us in the dust at her feet."

Shortly after publication of Smith's column, Ephron's former close friend Margo Howard wrote on Twitter: "A very accomplished writer died. Nora Ephron, from cancer."

Ephron's publisher Knopf later told The New York Times that Ephron is "still alive," according to a tweet from Times writer Julie Bosman. Knopf rep Elizabeth Lindsay said as much in a statement to the Atlantic Wire: "It's pretty critical. She's not doing well, but she's certainly alive ... The report she has passed away is not correct."

Stay tuned to MTV News for further updates on Ephron's condition.

Lawyer: Jerry Sandusky insists he's not guilty

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? As Jerry Sandusky insisted through a lawyer Monday that he is not guilty of sexually abusing children, a juror who voted to convict the retired Penn State assistant coach said she hoped the verdict would help his accusers heal.

The jury found the testimony of the eight victims who took the witness stand compelling, Ann Van Kuren said Monday. Jurors weighed the accounts and evidence diligently before finding Sandusky guilty last week of 45 counts for sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years, she said.

She expressed empathy for the eight men who offered emotional and explicit testimony.

"I really feel for the victims and any other victims that are out there that haven't come forward," Van Kuren said. "That all of them need to heal. I'm hoping that this trial, with this verdict, will help them heal."

The sweeping case rocked the Penn State community following Sandusky's arrest in November. The ensuing scandal led to the ousters of Sandusky's former boss ? Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno ? and the university's president, while forcing a re-examination of the role that college administrators played in reporting abuse allegations.

Sandusky, 68, is under observation at the Centre County jail, where he is being kept away from other inmates pending a psychological review that will help determine the next step toward his sentencing in about three months.

"He's defiant and wants the truth to be told. He wants people to know that he's not guilty," said defense lawyer Karl Rominger, who visited his incarcerated client Monday.

Also Monday, Judge John Cleland ordered county probation officers to evaluate whether Sandusky is a sexual predator, a finding that could factor into his prison placement. Such orders are pro forma in sex abuse cases. Sex offenders are required to undergo treatment while in prison, so Sandusky, if deemed a predator, would likely be sent to a facility with such a program.

Sandusky, who has been placed under a suicide watch, said he doesn't want to kill himself and wants to get the separate psychological examination done so that he can receive visits from his friends and family, Rominger said.

"He's fine but he's just not been evaluated," the lawyer said.

"He is very disappointed to be in prison. He is anxious to get out of this suicide watch," Rominger said, adding that Sandusky told him: "If I have to keep sitting in this room for another three or four days without being able to talk to anybody, I might start to need help at that point."

The state investigation into Sandusky didn't begin until after the ex-coach was barred from a high school in 2009, when a mother complained about the former coach. At the time, Gov. Tom Corbett was the state attorney general. Charges were filed in November 2011.

Investigators took into account Sandusky's status as a celebrated assistant coach in building the case, Corbett said Monday when asked in Harrisburg why charges weren't filed after the first accuser came forward.

"If it's one-on-one and now put the celebrity status in, put (that) Jerry Sandusky is loved by everybody ... how can anybody say there must be something wrong," Corbett said. "You'd better corroborate it, and that's what they started doing. They started pulling strings and gathering and gathering and gathering, and that's my experience. You build those cases, as well as you can."

Corbett said that while he worried that Sandusky might find a new victim while the investigation continued, "I believed (Sandusky) had to know we were looking at him at some point in time. In a sense, if you know that they're looking at you, you kind of back away. But it was a calculated risk, not one that you really easily want to take."

Sandusky has repeatedly maintained his innocence. He will likely die in prison, given mandatory minimum sentencing requirements.

The conviction is just the start of possibly years of legal proceedings over the case. Besides appeals, there remains an active investigation into Sandusky by the state attorney general's office, as well as a federal investigation.

Corbett said Penn State trustees are still awaiting the results of an internal investigation by former FBI director Louis Freeh into the school's handling of the Sandusky case.

The university could also face a wave of new lawsuits. An hour after the verdict Friday night, Penn State said in a statement it was inviting victims to "participate in a program to facilitate the resolution of claims against the university arising out of Mr. Sandusky's conduct." The school said it sought to address victims' concerns privately, expeditiously and fairly.

Asked to clarify Monday, school spokesman Dave LaTorre said the university won't discuss details about litigation or how much money might be set aside for potential settlements, and declined to comment further.

The verdict was another hurdle for a fractured Penn State community eager to continue what figures to be a long, arduous healing process. Artist Michael Pilato hoped to aid in that effort Monday when he painted a blue ribbon ? a symbol for awareness of child sexual abuse ? on the portion of his "Inspiration State College" mural downtown that once included Sandusky.

Over the weekend, he replaced the Sandusky image with Van Kuren's red handprint and a depiction of Dora McQuaid, a poet and advocate for domestic and sexual violence victims and issues. McQuaid is a Penn State graduate and former professor.

Van Kuren said she and Pilato were connected over the weekend through a mutual acquaintance.

"These young people that were the victims of the Sandusky case in my mind are the survivors," Pilato said. He painted the blue ribbon around McQuaid's image.

Van Kuren, who runs a nonprofit dance company, called the last few weeks difficult as she and other jurors were ordered to refrain from watching or reading the news and talking about the case with family and friends.

Jurors, she said, took a systematic approach in deliberations, weighing the counts in order as laid out in the state's presentment. Van Kuren said that in instances when jurors had additional questions for the judge ? such as when the jury requested a re-reading of key prosecution witness Mike McQueary's testimony of a 2001 allegation between Sandusky and a child in a shower ? they put counts related to that victim aside and moved to the next set of charges.

Asked about her perception now of Sandusky, Van Kuren said "I think we all felt that when we saw him, and even now what we hear about him, (that) he knows what he did."

The jury had a good rapport, but the difficult part about deliberations, she said, was the volume of testimony and evidence that had to be weighed. The jurors were respectful of the situations of "all parties" and took everything into consideration, she added.

Syrian forces fire at second Turkish plane: Turkey

ANKARA/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Turkey said on Monday Syrian forces had fired towards a Turkish military transport plane involved in a search for an F-4 reconnaissance jet shot down by Syria last week, but the second aircraft was not brought down.

Damascus described its shooting down of the F-4 jet on Friday as an act of self-defense and warned Ankara and its NATO allies against any retaliation. Turkey said the incident would "not go unpunished" but it did not intend to go to war over it.

The disclosure of the second incident came on the eve of a NATO crisis meeting that Turkey summoned to address the shooting down of its F-4 jet, which Ankara has described as an unprovoked attack in international airspace.

In shell-shattered districts of Homs, the heart of a 16-month-old revolt against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, rebels battled troops as aid workers tried to evacuate civilians. Turkish television reported the desertion of a Syrian general and other officers across the border.

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc told a news conference that Turkey would protect itself within the framework of international law against what it called Syria's "hostile action" of downing its F-4 warplane last week.

Arinc said at the end of a seven-hour cabinet meeting dealing with the incident: "Everyone should know that this kind of action will not remain unpunished."

But he added, "Whatever is needed to be done will definitely be done within the framework of international law. We have no intention of going to war with anyone. We have no such intent."

"HARASSING FIRE"

Arinc said that shortly after the F-4 was shot down, four helicopters and two ships were dispatched on an initial search operation, followed by a military turboprop transport aircraft.

"Our plane, which had gone to rescue (the pilots), was fired upon. This situation was brought to an end following a warning from our foreign ministry. But yes, there was a short period of harassing fire," said Arinc.

A foreign ministry official later said the plane returned to Turkish airspace immediately after being fired on and the search and rescue operation resumed following communications "through military and diplomatic channels". He said there were no injuries to anyone aboard the transport aircraft.

According to Ankara's account of Friday's episode, the aircraft entered Syrian airspace briefly and by mistake while on a mission to test Turkish air defenses.

Some analysts have suggested it might in fact have been testing the responsiveness of Russian-supplied Syrian radar that could pose a major obstacle to any foreign intervention, including supply of Syrian rebels or reconnaissance support.

Arinc said Syrian air "elements" had violated Turkish air space five times "recently" but that the incidents had been settled peacefully.

Syria's account of Friday's incident, though tempered with a stated commitment to a "neighborly relationship", seemed likely to increase anger in Turkey ahead of the NATO gathering.

SYRIAN WARNING

"NATO is supposed to be there to strengthen countries," Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi told a Damascus news conference. "If their meeting is for hostile reasons (they should know that) Syrian land and waters are sacred."

Turkey says the wreckage of the aircraft, shot down close to the Mediterranean maritime borders of both states, is lying in deep water. Makdissi said some flotsam had been found and given to Turkey. There was no word on the two airmen. ID:nL5E8HO0II]

"The plane disappeared and then reappeared in Syrian airspace, flying at 100 meters altitude and about 1-2 kms (0.6-1.2 miles) from the Syrian coast," he said.

"We had to react immediately. Even if the plane was Syrian we would have shot it down. The Syrian response was an act of defense of our sovereignty carried out by anti-aircraft machinegun which has a maximum range of 2.5 km."

Turkish air force chiefs briefed President Abdullah Gul, the armed forces chief, and the cabinet on what Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said would be a "decisive" response. Turkey also said it would take the matter to the U.N. Security Council.

The United States said it would work with NATO ally Turkey to hold Syria accountable for what U.S. officials believe was a deliberate act of shooting down the Turkish jet.

White House spokesman Jay Carney sidestepped questions about what an appropriate response might be to the incident, but officials at a U.S. Defense Department briefing said they believed the downing was deliberate.

Pentagon spokesman George Little said the "Syrian regime needs to answer for it. This once again shows the illegitimacy of the Assad regime and what it's doing and is deeply troubling.

ERDOGAN CAUTIOUS ON INCIDENT

Though not known for his emotional restraint, Erdogan has eschewed bellicose rhetoric over the incident, aware perhaps of Western reluctance to commit to any military action and wary himself of anything that could trigger a regional sectarian war.

"I'm not of the opinion that Turkey will immediately respond militarily," said Beril Dedeoglu of Galatasaray University. "But if there is another action, then there will certainly be a military response, there is no doubt."

Erdogan turned against former ally Assad after he rebuffed his advice to bow to demands for reform. He now allows the rebel Free Syrian Army to use Turkish territory as a safe haven, though Ankara denies supplying arms to the FSA.

Over 30,000 refugees are also accommodated On Turkish soil.

After Friday's attack, Erdogan invoked an article in NATO's founding treaty providing for urgent consultations if a member considers its security interests threatened.

Had he sought some kind of retaliation from the NATO meeting set for Tuesday, he could have invoked another article on mutual defense. That he did not do so suggests the reaction will remain, at least for now, on the diplomatic stage.

European Union foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg called for a calm response from Turkey, saying they would increase pressure on Assad.

"Military intervention in Syria is out of the question," said Dutch foreign minister Uri Rosenthal. "It is not a matter of consideration for the Dutch government. That is also at stake in the ... context of NATO."

DEFECTIONS

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it was again trying to arrange a safe evacuation of trapped civilians from Homs. But anti-government activists reported heavy shelling on central districts, including Jouret al-Shiyah and al-Qarabis. Video showed detonations and machinegun bursts from the skeletal shells of abandoned apartment blocks.

The activist Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Assad's troops carried out raids and arrests in areas still under army control, and heavy fighting between government forces and rebel fighters was reported in the opposition centers of Idlib, Deir al-Zor and Deraa, the birthplace of the uprising.

"In Deraa, regime regular troops are trying to reassert control of some villages with heavy shelling, gunfire and helicopters firing missiles," the Observatory said in an email. "People are fleeing villages because they know the army is trying to push out the rebels," it said.

A Syrian general, two colonels, two majors, a lieutenant and their families - 199 people in all - crossed the border into Turkey overnight, CNN Turk said. Thirteen Syrian generals are now in Turkey, which is giving logistical support to the rebels.

The new defections from Assad's armed forces could encourage those awaiting a disintegration of Assad's army. But there has been little indication of a broader trend to desertion in senior ranks, bound often to Assad by their Alawite background.

Alawites, whose sect is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, make up 90 percent of the officer corps. Sunni Muslims form the majority in Syria and are driving the uprising.

There are Sunni generals in Assad's military but they tend to serve in administrative roles rather than field commands, their religious adherence making them in authorities' eyes more likely to sympathize with the rebels.

The United Nations has said more than 10,000 people have been killed by government forces, while Syria has said at least 2,600 members of the military and security forces have been killed by what it calls foreign-backed "Islamist terrorists."

The intensification of the fighting has raised fears in Turkey of a flood of refugees and a slide into ethnic and religious warfare that could envelop the wider region.

Ankara, like the West, is torn between a wish to remove Assad and the fear that any armed intervention could unleash uncontrollable forces.

(AP) ? The rock was the star as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art pulled the covers off artist Michael Heizer's latest creation ? a 340-ton boulder positioned to appear as though it's floating in midair.

About a thousand people showed up under sunny skies in Los Angeles as the gigantic work titled "Levitated Mass" was unveiled Sunday on LACMA's backyard, where it is intended to remain forever.

Its centerpiece is the two-story-tall chunk of granite that was hauled 105 miles from a Riverside rock quarry earlier this year. Since then, the rock has been carefully positioned above a 465-foot-long trench that museum visitors can stroll.

From the trench, the rock appears to be hovering overhead.

The 67-year-old Heizer, who rarely appears in public, was on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony and led the first procession under the big rock. Along the way he waved and shook hands with museum officials and art enthusiasts.

Also Sunday, the museum opened "Michael Heizer: Actual Size," an exhibition of more than a dozen gigantic photographs showing other works by the artist.

Heizer may be best known for "Double Negative," a 1,500-foot-long land sculpture cut into a desert mesa in southern Nevada.

Heizer has planned for more than 40 years to create "Levitated Mass," but had to locate the perfect rock. He finally found one in a quarry on the outskirts of Riverside about seven years ago.

It took dozens of people and a specially built trailer to haul it over the surface streets of 22 cities.

The trip lasted nearly two weeks, with the rock traveling only at night and rarely faster than 5 mph. Thousands of people turned out to cheer it on.

To thank those who put up with road closures and other delays, the museum is granting free admission for a week to people who live in zip code areas traversed by the rock.

Hallucinating Robots Make the Best Interior Designers [Video]

We humans are already kind of afraid of robots, so here's a good idea: what if we make them trip balls and hallucinate imaginary people everywhere? Seems like it would drive them to madness and make them turn on us even faster, but researchers at Cornell University's Robot Learning Lab think it will make them better at their jobs. More »

Information flow in the brain is not a 'one-way street'

ScienceDaily (June 22, 2012) ? A longstanding question in brain research is how information is processed in the brain. Neuroscientists at the Charit? -- Universit?tsmedizin Berlin, Cluster of Excellence NeuroCure and University of Newcastle have made a contribution towards answering this question. In a new study, they have shown that signals are generated not only in the cell body of nerve cells, but also in their output extension, the axon. A specific filter cell regulates signal propagation.

These findings have now been published in the journal Science.

Until now it has been assumed that information flow in nerve cells proceeds along a "one-way street." Electrical impulses are initiated at the cell body and propagate along the axon to the next neuron, where they are received by extensions, the dendrites, acting as antennae. However, the team around Charit? researchers Tengis Gloveli and Tamar Dugladze has demonstrated that this model needs to be revised. They discovered that signals can also be initiated in axons, i.e. outside the cell body. This happens during highly synchronous neuronal activity as, for example, in a state of heightened attention. Moreover, these axonally generated signals flow bidirectionally and represent a new principle of information processing: on the one hand, impulses propagate from their origin towards other nerve cells; on the other hand, the signals also backpropagate towards the cell body, i.e. in the "wrong direction" down the one-way street. A potential problem is that backpropagating signals could lead to excessive cell activation.

However, the researchers found that backpropagating signals do not reach the cell body under normal conditions. The reason for this, the scientists discovered, is a natural filter that prevents these signals from passing. "Axo-axonic cells, an inhibitory cell type, regulate signal propagation and thus occupy an outstanding strategic position," explains Tamar Dugladze. Through the filter function, these cells allow signals initiated at the cell body to pass, but suppress backpropagating impulses generated in the axon. By this means, excessive activation of the cell body is prevented. In experiments, the scientists could show that when this filter function is deactivated, backpropagating signals are allowed to pass, resulting in higher cell activation.

These filter cells can become damaged in various neurological diseases. The consequent misregulation of signal flow, in turn, has fatal effects on information processing in the brain. "Results of this study shed new light on the central question of how signals are processed in the brain. In addition, these findings could help us better understand the development and progress of neuronal diseases such as epilepsy, which involves excessive hypersynchronous activity of large sets of neurons. This knowledge could open up new therapeutic approaches," says Tengis Gloveli. The neuroscientists will therefore focus their future research on both basic understanding of the mechanisms of signal flow in the nervous system, and the relevance of these mechanisms in the genesis of epilepsy.

Saturday Morning Breakfast & Baseball: Pine Tar, Song Covers, An On-Air Stroke (?), Name-Calling, and Ranting

By now, you've all likely heard about the Joel Peralta saga. Peralta joins the Washington Nationals in 2010 as an unspectacular reliever. He turns in the best season of his career, as he has a 2.02 ERA and his peripheral stats mostly back up his success. He somehow gets designated for assignment anyway, and latches on with the Rays, where he's mostly continued his run of being an above-average reliever. All of a sudden, thanks to interleague we see the Rays and Nationals square up, and what happens right as Peralta enters Tuesday's game? Nationals manager Davey Johnson goes straight to the umpires and says, "Hey, umm, I have this idea that you may want to check Peralta's glove out there."

Lo and behold, there's pine tar in the glove, Peralta gets suspended 8 games, and Rays manager Joe Maddon gets into a catfight with Davey Johnson through the media. What's especially interesting about this entire thing is that according to former pitcher Dirk Hayhurst, this is not an isolated incident. Hayhurst mentions both in his blog and in his book Out Of My League that it's common for pitchers to doctor up the baseball, though his blog post was written as a response to Jose Valverde possibly spitting on a baseball a couple weeks ago rather than Peralta's misfortune.

Also, there are some people speculating that Peralta was caught because he started using pine tar in 2010 when he joined the Nationals, thus how he turned himself from an average middle reliever into a solid set-up man. Also, the Nationals chose to keep the information secret until it would benefit them the most, namely when they would have to face Peralta in a close game, such as what happened Tuesday.

What have I learned through this whole thing? Pitchers cheat way more than we think, and MLB has ridiculous suspension rules (8 games for doctoring a baseball, 5 for throwing at a hitter on purpose, and none for having a DUI).

  • On a lighter note, Bronson Arroyo and Aroldis Chapman visited Lindsay Guentzel and the MLB Fan Cave earlier this week, and they teamed up to sing a baseball-themed version of Adam Sandler's "Red Hooded Sweatshirt." I had no idea what Chapman's role was in the song (Scatting? Saying funny nonsense things to make us laugh?) so I had to go and listen to the original on YouTube to understand the point of the "Dip-dip-dip." On a related note, if you're ever near me and you hear me randomly say "Dip-dip-dip," well, now you know why.
  • Sometimes we joke about either Dick Bremer and/or Bert Blyleven being drunk on the air, but Rangers play-by-play announcer Dave Barnett said something on the air that was truly absurd. You can listen to the exchange from Monday's Rangers/Padres game courtesy of Deadspin, but here's the whole thing that Barnett said...

The go-ahead run is at fifth on what [Mike] Adams is insisting on calling it a botched robbery. What actually happened was his henchman took piece literally out of...

...and then his microphone was turned off. This episode is being attributed to the migraines that Barnett regularly has, but this is the first time I've ever heard a migraine being responsible for a person spouting off gibberish (Maybe that's why Aroldis Chapman was saying "Dip-dip-dip"!). There hasn't been any updates on Barnett since then, but I have a feeling that it was more likely he had a stroke on the air. He missed both Tuesday and Wednesday's games for a medical evaluation and the Rangers were off Thursday, so as now (Friday morning) he has not returned to the broadcasting booth.

  • Frank Francisco may have said a little too much when he told the New York Post, "I can't wait to face those chickens." By chickens, he means the Yankees. Francisco then added that he wanted to strike out the side in one of the games, as he's done it against the Yankees once before. Plus, unlike Torii Hunter, his story of the past is actually true, as he once struck out Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and Jason Giambi in one inning back in 2004. Hearing Francisco make that chicken quote reminds me of Pedro Martinez, who also in 2004 said, "What can I say? Just tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddy." Granted, Pedro's comments were in response to the Bronx Bombers owning him, unlike Francisco's comment.
  • You'd think that basically cleaning house by replacing manager Terry Francona with Bobby Valentine and general manager Theo Epstein with Ben Cherington would have eliminated the drama in Boston, but to David Ortiz, it's clear that this was not the case. Even after playing well, the Boston media has seemed more interested in discussing various dramas circling the Red Sox, which led Big Papi to give us the following sound bite about playing in Boston:

It's becoming the [bleep]hole it used to be. Look around, bro. Look around. Playing here used to be so much fun.

Yikes. Is this going to stop the media, though? I doubt it. After all, it's their job to get page views, and getting juicy tidbits about the team is likely going to get more readers than sticking to game recaps and player profiles. I kind of agree with Bobby Valentine that it's possible that Ortiz is trying to take some of the heat off other players, but I do wonder one thing: What were the issues in Boston's past that Papi is citing?

Brian Duensing makes his starting debut later today. Someday, the Twins will have a role for Duensing and they will stick with it for an entire season. This year, and the previous three years, is not that year.
