Community TV In Rocky Hill Gets New Look

ROCKY HILL ??

Local programming on Rocky Hill Community TV is taking on a markedly different look.

The staid, humdrum set of years past is gone. In its place, viewers now see a variety of eye-catching backdrops and desk pods. On-air hosts, if they choose, can share the screen with local landmarks like the Rocky Hill ferry or the Dinosaur State Park dome without ever leaving the Main Street studio.

Such is the magic of the virtual production studio that RHCTV producers now have at their disposal.

"It has exceeded all of our expectations,'' RHCTV board Vice President Andrew Brescia said. "We're probably the first [access group] in Connecticut that can do what we can do.''

This past summer, RHCTV officials learned that their application for a grant to purchase a "studio in a box,'' state-of-the art digitalized, computer production equipment, was approved by the state Public Utilities Regulatory Authority.

In addition to the NewTek TriCaster live production system, the $72,031.75 covered new lighting, a critical backdrop curtain and costs for installation and training. Four RHCTV volunteers repainted the studio and one of them, Brescia, did the necessary rewiring. Installation was completed in late September. The system has been in use for about a month now and is currently used to produce several shows, longtime RHCTV President Algot Hagglund said.

Both still photographs and animation can be combined in creating set designs. "The system allows us to Photo Shop images, layering them,'' Hagglund said. The green backdrop and cool, energy-efficient fluorescent lighting provide sharper, clearer imaging. The station's old static set, basically unchanged for 20 years, was a thing of the past.

"We felt things had gotten kind of stale,'' Brescia said. The new technology will allow content to be video-streamed and hopefully will appeal to younger producers, he said. The station which has been reliant on a handful of veteran volunteers would like to get younger, video-savvy viewers interested in production. A single host and trained producer is needed for each show.

The virtual studio project is the second upgrade at the station in two years using Public Educational and Governmental Programming and Education Technology Investment Account (PEGPETIA) grants. In 2009, a $31,153 grant enabled the station to convert it signal capability from analog to digital and acquire new cameras with high-definition capability.

In time, Brescia said he hopes that with help from Cox Communications, RHCTV will one day be able to take its next big step. "We want to broadcast in HD,'' he said.

Bahrain to host Saudi prince's news network

(AP) ? Bahrain has been picked to host the headquarters for Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal's new international Arabic news network despite months of unrest, according to the tiny Gulf kingdom's media oversight authority.

Alwaleed's channel, dubbed Alarab, will be based in the Bahraini capital Manama's new Media City office complex, Sheik Fawaz bin Mohammed Al-Khalifa, a member of the Bahraini royal family and head of the country's Information Affairs Authority, said in a statement late Tuesday.

The network is expected to be launched next December with an initial staff of about 300 people, according to the Bahraini statement.

Alwaleed's office has not itself said where the channel will be based.

Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi journalist hired to lead the network, said by email Wednesday he expects the deal to be finalized later in the day.

The channel aims to focus "on the important shifts taking place across the Arab world, with an emphasis on freedom of speech and freedom of press," Alwaleed said in September.

The new channel will compete against older pan-Arab news networks bankrolled by wealthy Gulf backers, including Qatar's Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya, which is funded by Saudi investors but based in Dubai.

Alwaleed has signed a deal with business news service Bloomberg LP to provide content for Alarab. That could potentially put it in competition with Dubai-based business news channel CNBC Arabiya as well.

The Saudi prince, through the Kingdom Holding Co. investment firm he controls, has a major stakes in Citigroup Inc., Apple Inc. and Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.

He and the investment company last week invested a combined $300 million into microblogging site Twitter, which played a key role in conveying developments during this year's Arab Spring uprisings.

The senior management of Alwaleed's Rotana entertainment television division is also expected to move to Bahrain as part of the deal, according to the IAA. Rotana runs film and music video channels across the Middle East that draw on the company's extensive Arabic film and music catalogs.

Bahrain has been shaken by 10 months of large-scale protests, and clashes between security forces loyal to the Sunni monarchy and opposition groups led by the country's majority Shiites.

The kingdom's leadership is closely allied to Saudi Arabia, which looms large in Bahrain's domestic politics and provides vital tourist dollars. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states sent security forces into Bahrain at the invitation of the king to help put down the protests in March.

Rare white Christmas graces Texas panhandle (Reuters)

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) ? A light dusting of snow in north Texas delivered a rare white Christmas to this drought-stricken state, but the majority of the nation was seeing mild weather on Sunday.

Snow showers glazed parts of the Northeast as well, with snowy road conditions cited as a factor in a two-vehicle traffic collision that left four men dead in the town of Palermo, Maine, on Sunday.

But weather forecasters said 99 percent of Americans would see more green and brown for their Yuletide celebrations -- along with plenty of rain, according to Accuweather.com.

Other fair-weather exceptions included freeze warnings posted in the farm-rich Central Valley of California, gale warnings near the Great Lakes, and high winds that left thousands of homes without power in and around Seattle.

The wet Christmas in the Texas panhandle and Permian Basin brought some cheer for drought-weary Texans, who were seeing snow in Lubbock and Amarillo on Christmas morning and rain in the eastern part of the state.

The worst drought on record in Texas this year stoked devastating wildfires, killed as many as half a billion trees, and prompted the most serious urban water-use restrictions ever in the state.

By mid-afternoon on Sunday, at least 4 inches of snow had fallen in Amarillo, making it the second snowiest Christmas in that city's history, National Weather Service forecaster Stephen Bilodeau said.

And with winter weather advisories in effect until 6 a.m. on Monday, there was a chance that Amarillo's record for snow accumulation might be broken before midnight.

Bilodeau said he would have preferred that the snow quit early and left the afternoon safer for Christmas Day travel.

"It's a little bit too much," he said. "The white Christmas through the beginning of the day was good, but now these poor people are getting out into this stuff. There have been a few accidents, and it's ruining a few people's day today."

Not so for native Texan and conservationist Don Alexander, 55, who was spending the holiday with his wife's family in Midland, and enjoying his very first white Christmas.

"The snow is a nifty bonus," Alexander said, as his college-aged daughter posted snow pictures on her Facebook page. "The snow will certainly make this particular Christmas memorable. Winter isn't very scenic in West Texas, so the layer of snow is a nice effect. The bad part is having to wipe down the dog's paws every time he goes outside and then back in."

Far to the north, public safety officials in Maine said four men were killed in a head-on crash between an SUV and another vehicle on a road made slippery by light snowfall in Palermo, about 60 miles northeast of Portland. Police said the collision ranks as Maine's deadliest traffic wreck this year.

In the Midwest, a lack of snow was especially welcome news in Minneapolis, where a pre-Christmas storm last year dumped 17 inches of snow, causing the roof of the Metrodome, the Minnesota Viking's football stadium, to collapse.

This year, Minneapolis was without snow and basking in temperatures that climbed into the relatively balmy high-30s over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Very little fresh snow was expected to fall elsewhere throughout the day on Sunday, according to Accuweather.com. But a storm in southern Ontario was forecast to move into Quebec on Sunday night and drop snow near the Great Lakes, with some accumulation expected overnight.

Residents from Watertown, New York, to Bangor, Maine -- many of whom are off work on Monday in observance of the Christmas holiday -- could wake up to an inch of snow on the ground Monday as that storm moves East.

The Weather Service posted a wind advisory for western Washington state on Sunday, warning of gusts reaching 50 miles per hour through mid-afternoon.

Utility companies reported at least 24,000 homes and businesses without electricity in Seattle and the greater Puget Sound region during the day, mostly from tree limbs blown into power lines.

Most of the Pacific Northwest was experiencing mild weather on Christmas Day, while states like Colorado and New Mexico had lingering snow leftover from a pre-Christmas storm.

Manhattan Scientifics Leads with Magnetic Nano-Particle-Based Early Cancer Detection Technology

By Cameron Chai

Manhattan Scientifics is a company specializing in the technology transition and commercialization of nanomedicine technologies that includes the early detection technology of Flynn.

Flynn has spent a decade for fine tuning his early detection technology that is capable of detecting cancerous tumor much earlier with 100% specificity and without radiation when compared to the current mammogram technologies. The technology utilizes iron oxide nanoparticles, which are bonded to the breast cancer antibodies capable of attaching only with breast cancer cells. A SQUID machine is used to detect the magnetic signal released by the bound nanoparticles. The patented technology allows the technician to detect the cancerous tumor having as low as 100,000 cells, whereas a typical mammogram can detect a tumor only when it is having 100 million cells or more.

The article has also noted that the MD Anderson Cancer Center located in Houston has shown interest as a means of recognition of the early detection capability of Flynn?s technology. The article also pointed out the statement of John Hazle of the MD Anderson Cancer Center. According to the statement, the center inked a pre-clinical assessment study of the magnetic nano-particle technology in August 2011.

Christmas shopping spree donated Pratt City tornado survivors

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

100 Pratt City children are getting their Christmas wishes fulfilled thanks to Toys "R" Us and the city of Birmingham. The children all survived the April tornadoes, but their homes were damaged or destroyed.

With the families struggling, Christmas was an afterthought for them. That is why the toy store and several other area businesses chipped in to give these children a big shopping spree.

"I been up like I don't know how long trying to figure out how I'm going to get them some toys, just get them something for Christmas. If it ain't even much, it's a doll, so this is a blessing to have," said tornado survivor Lachandra Clayton.

"Some families lost everything. This goes a long way, but others are willing to step up as well," said Birmingham Mayor William Bell.

Only ten children were allowed to do their own shopping. City workers gathered toys and games for the other 90 children and will deliver them before Christmas.

Skeletons point to Columbus voyage for syphilis origins

Tuesday, December 20, 2011

Skeletons don't lie. But sometimes they may mislead, as in the case of bones that reputedly showed evidence of syphilis in Europe and other parts of the Old World before Christopher Columbus made his historic voyage in 1492.

None of this skeletal evidence, including 54 published reports, holds up when subjected to standardized analyses for both diagnosis and dating, according to an appraisal in the current Yearbook of Physical Anthropology. In fact, the skeletal data bolsters the case that syphilis did not exist in Europe before Columbus set sail.

"This is the first time that all 54 of these cases have been evaluated systematically," says George Armelagos, an anthropologist at Emory University and co-author of the appraisal. "The evidence keeps accumulating that a progenitor of syphilis came from the New World with Columbus' crew and rapidly evolved into the venereal disease that remains with us today."

The appraisal was led by two of Armelagos' former graduate students at Emory: Molly Zuckerman, who is now an assistant professor at Mississippi State University, and Kristin Harper, currently a post-doctoral fellow at Columbia University. Additional authors include Emory anthropologist John Kingston and Megan Harper from the University of Missouri.

"Syphilis has been around for 500 years," Zuckerman says. "People started debating where it came from shortly afterwards, and they haven't stopped since. It was one of the first global diseases, and understanding where it came from and how it spread may help us combat diseases today."

'The natural selection of a disease'

The treponemal family of bacteria causes syphilis and related diseases that share some symptoms but spread differently. Syphilis is sexually transmitted. Yaws and bejel, which occurred in early New World populations, are tropical diseases that are transmitted through skin-to-skin contact or oral contact.

The first recorded epidemic of venereal syphilis occurred in Europe in 1495. One hypothesis is that a subspecies of Treponema from the warm, moist climate of the tropical New World mutated into the venereal subspecies to survive in the cooler and relatively more hygienic European environment.

The fact that syphilis is a stigmatized, sexual disease has added to the controversy over its origins, Zuckerman says.

"In reality, it appears that venereal syphilis was the by-product of two different populations meeting and exchanging a pathogen," she says. "It was an adaptive event, the natural selection of a disease, independent of morality or blame."

An early doubter

Armelagos, a pioneer of the field of bioarcheology, was one of the doubters decades ago, when he first heard the Columbus theory for syphilis. "I laughed at the idea that a small group of sailors brought back this disease that caused this major European epidemic," he recalls.

While teaching at the University of Massachusetts, he and graduate student Brenda Baker decided to investigate the matter and got a shock: All of the available evidence at the time actually supported the Columbus theory. "It was a paradigm shift," Armelagos says. The pair published their results in 1988.

In 2008, Harper and Armelagos published the most comprehensive comparative genetic analysis ever conducted on syphilis's family of bacteria. The results again supported the hypothesis that syphilis, or some progenitor, came from the New World.

A second, closer look

But reports of pre-Columbian skeletons showing the lesions of chronic syphilis have kept cropping up in the Old World. For this latest appraisal of the skeletal evidence, the researchers gathered all of the published reports.

They found that most of the skeletal material did not meet at least one of the standardized, diagnostic criteria for chronic syphilis, including pitting on the skull known as caries sicca and pitting and swelling of the long bones.

The few published cases that did meet the criteria tended to come from coastal regions where seafood was a big part of the diet. The so-called "marine reservoir effect," caused by eating seafood which contains "old carbon" from upwelling, deep ocean waters, can throw off radiocarbon dating of a skeleton by hundreds, or even thousands, of years. Analyzing the collagen levels of the skeletal material enabled the researchers to estimate the seafood consumption and factor that result into the radiocarbon dating.

"Once we adjusted for the marine signature, all of the skeletons that showed definite signs of treponemal disease appeared to be dated to after Columbus returned to Europe," Harper says.

"The origin of syphilis is a fascinating, compelling question," Zuckerman says. "The current evidence is pretty definitive, but we shouldn't close the book and say we're done with the subject. The great thing about science is constantly being able to understand things in a new light."

Developers say Tangipahoa Parish sitting on oil

wwltv.com

Posted on December 16, 2011 at 10:17 PM

Updated Friday, Dec 16 at 10:22 PM

Doug Mouton / Northshore Bureau Chief

FLUKER, LA -- Tangipahoa Parish now has its first working oil rig.

It's described as an evaluation well in Fluker, as the oil industry taps into the Tangipahoa section of the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale.

The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale is roughly 2.7 million acres, which stretches across central Louisiana and into Southwest Mississippi.

According to LSU geologists, that land may contain 7 billion barrels of oil, and new technology may allow that oil to be safely and effectively collected.

"The sweet spot, if you will, of the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale find, is in north Tangipahoa Parish," said Tangipahoa Parish Economic Development Director Bob Basford.

The well in Fluker is massive, 142-feet tall. It's a combined effort from Devon Energy of Oklahoma City and Nabors Drilling of Houston.

"Are we excited about it?" Bob Basford asked. "Absolutely. Are we optimistic? Cautiously optimistic, yes."

A spokesperson for Devon Energy told Eyewitness News by phone Friday that because the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale in Tangipahoa Parish is a new plate, a new oil bearing formation, it's unchartered territory. The spokesperson called it a learning process, and wouldn't put a timetable on it.

Beginning early in the year, Tangipahoa landowners along the Tuscaloosa Shale were offered money for their mineral rights.

"The contract reads oil, gas and sulphur," Ellis Verdin told Eyewitness News back in February. "Any mineral rights like this." Verdin owns 62 acres east of Amite. He said he was offered $100 an acre for his mineral rights, and one-sixth of the royalties.

"It's explorational," Verdin said, "but they have a pretty good idea that there may be something here. It's not a definite. I didn't get that from them, but there's a chance there may be."

The selling of mineral rights was an economic boost for Tangipahoa Parish, but what Bob Basford described as a "minor boost."

"There are Tangipahoa Parish citizens and landowners that have more cash in their hands for Christmas had this not happened, significantly more," Basford said. "But that's nearly what we're looking for. That's not the workforce creator, the business investment creator, that we're looking for in the Economic Development Organization."

The job creation comes, according to Basford, with the actual finding of oil, and if the exploration finds what they expect to find.

"It doesn't create jobs on a one-time hit," Basford said. "It creates a decade's worth of production and jobs. The wells can be fracked and then they can be refracked and then the pipelines that will carry to product to a refinery, for example, have to be constructed. That sort of thing. That will take a long time, and create lots of jobs."

Basford said he wouldn't be surprised to soon see a couple hundred working oil wells in Tangipahoa Parish, assuming number one is successful.

(AP) ? Brittney Griner can finally forget about those missed free throws in Baylor's one-point loss at Connecticut in another 1-2 matchup.

This time, Griner was flawless from the line and scored 12 of her 25 points in the closing run that pushed the top-ranked Lady Bears past No. 2 UConn 66-61 on Sunday night.

"That's the first thing I looked at," Griner said, holding the stat sheet that showed she made all seven free throws ? six in that game-ending 27-11 spurt. "I just knew I had to knock them down, stayed calmed and did everything I needed to do."

The Huskies may have a hard time getting over the thought of Griner, Baylor's 6-foot-8 junior All-America pick, making shots and swatting others away.

Griner also had nine rebounds and nine blocked shots for the Lady Bears (11-0), who overcame an 11-point deficit in the second half and won their second No. 1 vs. No. 2 game this season.

Baylor also avenged that loss at Connecticut early last season when the rankings were reversed and Griner missed eight free throws.

"The obvious answer is she's just a lot bigger than any kid that she's going to be playing against," said UConn's Geno Auriemma, who coached Griner on the U.S. national women's basketball team this past offseason.

"She's developed a little bit of an aggressiveness and a few more ways to score than she's had in the past and that's made it really difficult to defend her."

Odyssey Sims had 23 points for the Lady Bears, whose 29-game home winning streak includes a 94-81 win over then-No. 2 Notre Dame in November.

"We said going into the game, Odyssey Sims is going to decide this game," Auriemma said. "Brittney is going to get what Brittney gets every night. And that was a typical Brittney game."

Bria Hartley led Connecticut (9-1) with 25 points, while Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had 15 and Tiffany Hayes 10.

It was the most anticipated home game ever for the Lady Bears, the first time a men's or women's game sold out in advance at the Ferrell Center. The record crowd of 10,627 included Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III, who flashed the pose and got a huge ovation when he was shown on the screen.

They erupted into a frenzy when Sims threw the ball high in the air as time ran out.

Connecticut, whose average margin of victory this season was nearly 42 points, was 13-2 in previous games matching 1 vs. 2, including eight wins in a row. Their previous was the 65-64 victory over Baylor last season.

"I think (our players) were very mature in the locker room at halftime, very focused," coach Kim Mulkey said. "They understood, you're not just playing the current UConn team, you're playing a very proud tradition."

The Huskies had a 50-39 lead with just over 15 minutes left after hitting three consecutive 3-pointers in a 2-minute stretch. Mosqueda-Lewis hit two of those, starting and ending a string that also included Hayes' 3.

Right after that, Griner got her fifth block of the game to break the Big 12 career record, and made some key free throws as well. She broke Courtney Paris' Big 12 career record of 446, and now has 451.

"Shot blocking is the one thing I love the most," Griner said. "To me that's better than a dunk, or anything like that."

Griner quickly added another block when she swatted away a shot by Hayes and followed with two free throws. Sims then had a steal and drove for a bank shot to wrap up 10 consecutive points by the Lady Bears to cut the gap to 50-49.

Hartley broke that streak with a basket that just beat the shot clock. After Griner was called for a charging foul, Stefanie Dolson hit a jumper for the Huskies.

Griner and Kelly Faris traded two free throws each around the 5-minute mark before the Lady Bears went ahead to stay on Terran Condrey's 3-pointer that made it 58-56 with 4? minutes left.

"She wanted to get it into Griner, who was relocating in there, trying to get deeper and get deeper. She just saw an opportunity where the defender gave her an open look," Mulkey said. "If it goes in, you pat her on the back. And if it doesn't, you go, 'Why didn't you get it to Griner?'"

Sims made four free throws in the final 1:21 to seal the game for Baylor.

Auriemma got a nice ovation when he came on the court about 4 minutes before tipoff, and responded by returning the applause to the crowd. Mulkey came out a couple of minutes later, and the cheers got really loud when the two coaches shook hands.

Griner made a short hook on the first shot of the game, and when she made another 6 minutes into the game, the Lady Bears had a 14-5 lead. That was the Huskies' biggest deficit of the season.

Baylor didn't trail until Connecticut made consecutive 3-pointers. Mosqueda-Lewis rattled one in from the right side with 5 minutes left and Hayes followed a Baylor miss with a shot from beyond the arc for a 27-26 lead.

Those long baskets came right after the Huskies had turnovers on three consecutive possessions, including a pair of steals by Sims, though the Bears got only two points out of that stretch. Sims had a breakaway layup after the first turnover, but got called for a charge when she tried it again and the Bears then turned it over themselves.

Genome tree of life is largest yet for seed plants

Friday, December 16, 2011

Scientists at the American Museum of Natural History, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, The New York Botanical Garden, and New York University have created the largest genome-based tree of life for seed plants to date. Their findings, published today in the journal PLoS Genetics, plot the evolutionary relationships of 150 different species of plants based on advanced genome-wide analysis of gene structure and function. This new approach, called "functional phylogenomics," allows scientists to reconstruct the pattern of events that led to the vast number of plant species and could help identify genes used to improve seed quality for agriculture.

"Ever since Darwin first described the 'abominable mystery' behind the rapid explosion of flowering plants in the fossil record, evolutionary biologists have been trying to understand the genetic and genomic basis of the astounding diversity of plant species," said Rob DeSalle, a corresponding author on the paper and a curator in the Museum's Division of Invertebrate Zoology who conducts research at the Sackler Institute for Comparative Genomics. "Having the architecture of this plant tree of life allows us to start to decipher some of the interesting aspects of evolutionary innovations that have occurred in this group."

The research, performed by members of the New York Plant Genomics Consortium, was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Plant Genome Program to identify the genes that caused the evolution of seeds, a trait of important economic interest. The group selected 150 representative species from all of the major seed plant groups to include in the study. The species span from the flowering variety?peanuts and dandelions, for example?to non-flowering cone plants like spruce and pine. The sequences of the plants' genomes?all of the biological information needed to build and maintain an organism, encoded in DNA?were either culled from pre-existing databases or generated, in the field and at The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, from live specimens.

With new algorithms developed at the Museum and NYU and the processing power of supercomputers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and overseas, the sequences?nearly 23,000 sets of genes (specific sections of DNA that code for certain proteins)?were grouped, ordered, and organized in a tree according to their evolutionary relationships. Algorithms that determine similarities of biological processes were used to identify the genes underlying species diversity.

"Previously, phylogenetic trees were constructed from standard sets of genes and were used to identify the relationships of species," said Gloria Coruzzi, a professor in New York University's Center for Genomics and Systems Biology and the principal investigator of the NSF grant. "In our novel approach, we create the phylogeny based on all the genes in a genome, and then use the phylogeny to identify which genes provide positive support for the divergence of species."

The results support major hypotheses about evolutionary relationships in seed plants. The most interesting finding is that gnetophytes, a group that consists mostly of shrubs and woody vines, are the most primitive living non-flowering seed plants?present since the late Mesozoic era, the "age of dinosaurs." They are situated at the base of the evolutionary tree of seed plants.

"This study resolves the long-standing problem of producing an unequivocal evolutionary tree of the seed plants," said Dennis Stevenson, vice president for laboratory research at The New York Botanical Garden. "We can then use this information to determine when and where important adaptations occur and how they relate to plant diversification. We also can examine the evolution of such features as drought tolerance, disease resistance, or crop yields that sustain human life through improved agriculture."

In addition, the researchers were able to make predictions about genes that caused the evolution of important plant characteristics. One such evolutionary signal is RNA interference, a process that cells use to turn down or silence the activity of specific genes. Based on their new phylogenomic maps, the researchers believe that RNA interference played a large role in the separation of monocots?plants that have a single seed leaf, including orchids, rice, and sugar cane?from other flowering plants. Even more surprising, RNA interference also played a major role in the emergence of flowering plants themselves.

"Genes required for the production of small RNA in seeds were at the very top of the list of genes responsible for the evolution of flowering plants from cone plants," said Rob Martienssen, a professor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. "In collaboration with colleagues from LANGEBIO [Laboratorio Nacional de Genomica para la Biodiversidad] in Mexico last year, we found that these same genes control maternal reproduction, providing remarkable insight into the evolution of reproductive strategy in flowering plants."

The data and software resources generated by the researchers are publicly available and will allow other comparative genomic researchers to exploit plant diversity to identify genes associated with a trait of interest or agronomic value. These studies could have implications for improving the quality of seeds and, in turn, agricultural products ranging from food to clothing.

In addition, the phylogenomic approach used in this study could be applied to other groups of organisms to further explore how species originated, expanded, and diversified.

"The collaboration among the institutions involved here is a great example of how modern science works," said Sergios-Orestis Kolokotronis, a term assistant professor at Columbia University's Barnard College and a research associate at the Museum's Sackler Institute. "Each of the four institutions involved has its own strengths and these strengths were nicely interwoven to produce a novel vision of plant evolution."

Paul, Bachmann spar over Iran and nuclear threat (AP)

SIOUX CITY, Iowa ? Republican presidential candidates Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann are trading barbs over Iran, with the Texas congressman saying the U.S. has no legitimate claim to block Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon and Bachmann calling his position wildly dangerous.

The two House members clashed during Thursday night's GOP debate while standing next to each other.

Paul says that terrorists want to harm the U.S. because it bombs innocent civilians and invades countries. The libertarian-leaning lawmaker says the worries over a nuclear Iran are merely the pretense for the U.S. to start another war.

Bachmann says that Iran is led by "an avowed madman" and committed to destroying Israel. She says Iran must be stopped.

A Quarter of Europe Has Never Used the Internet (The Atlantic Wire)

For all that debate over whether Europe's diverse nations should even be united under one fiscal union, here's an eye-popping statistic: Nearly one quarter of European Union citizens have never used the internet. Specifically 24 percent of 16-to-74 year olds in the European Union's 27 member states have never accessed it.?The data comes from Eurostat, a Luxembourg-based organization charged with providing data on the European Union. The organization says, unsurprisingly, that eastern and southern European nations provide the bulk of the unconnected citizens. Romania has the fewest people with internet access at 46 percent, and?Sweden?has the most with 95 percent connected. The Globe and Mail?is shocked enough by the numbers to write, "Never mind the Euro crisis." From their analysis:

As well as highlighting geographic disparities across one of the world's most-developed regions, the figures underline the lack of opportunity people in poorer communities have to take part in advances such as the Internet that have delivered lower cost goods and service to millions of people.

The data about each country is fun to look through, and it certainly provides a nuanced look at the region whose fiscal crisis is capturing headlines this year.?

PFT: Bucs player criticizes Morris' handling of Talib

Mike Holmgren, Eric ManginiAP

Browns President Mike Holmgren attempted to, in his words, ?Set the record as straight as I can? in a press conference today, after the team has been widely criticized for its handling of quarterback Colt McCoy?s concussion on Thursday.

Specifically, Holmgren stood up for the Browns? medical staff and head coach Pat Shurmur for allowing McCoy to return to the game following a head-to-head hit from Steelers linebacker James Harrison.

?Our medical staff and our training staff, they are the best in football,? Holmgren said. ?These guys are really good. So one of the things that is troubling to me in this whole process is that they?re getting slammed a bit, along with the head coach. . . . And it?s unfair.?

Holmgren said the Browns? medical staff hadn?t seen the Harrison-on-McCoy hit and only went out to check on McCoy when they were alerted to it by others on the sideline. Holmgren said that when the medical staff reached McCoy, he was lucid and complaining only about pain in his hand, not his head.

?When the injury took place on the field, at that time the question came up, did the doctors see the impact on the play? They did not. And our trainers did not,? Holmgren said. ?They were all working, as is typical in a game. They were working on other injured players in the bench area or behind players. So they did not see the play. They heard the crowd reaction, someone said, ?Colt?s down.??

Holmgren said that the Browns have met with league and union officials about the incident. He said the franchise will not be facing any type of discipline for its handling of McCoy, but that the Browns do want to make sure they?re doing everything that the league and the union think they can and should do about concussions.

?We?ve met with the NFL as well as the union doctors,? Holmgren said. ?There?s a lot of speculation, there?s a lot of things that have been written and said, and the reason that we waited as an organization to have this meeting is that we had to have those other meetings before. . . . I don?t expect anything to happen in a punitive manner, but it was a good meeting.?

Six days after McCoy?s concussion, Holmgren said he hasn?t spoken with McCoy but is optimistic that McCoy will be OK.

?He still has a headache,? Holmgren said. ?But other than that, from what they tell me, he?s good.?

Afghans weary of yet another summit ahead of Bonn Conference

An international conference on Afghanistan's future opens Monday in Bonn, Germany. But on the streets of Kabul, Afghans have low expectations a decade into the Western presence here.

As leaders from around the world gather in Bonn, Germany to discuss the future of Afghanistan the stakes could not be higher.?Question marks hover over NATO and Afghan forces' progress against the insurgency, the future of US involvement after its 2014 withdrawal deadline, and which factions in the conflict Pakistan will ultimately support.

Yet for many Afghans, the second Bonn Conference is little to be excited about. International summits like it have taken place on a nearly annual basis over the past ten years and most Afghans say they?ve seen little change as a result.

?I don?t think these conferences are for the good of Afghanistan. We?ve seen many other conferences where hundreds or even thousands of people came. During conferences here in Afghanistan, they closed the roads and people suffered due to strict security policies or even died in attacks during the conference, but they changed nothing,? says Zmary Sapai, a wholesale food merchant in Kabul. ?These conferences are just throwing dirt in the eyes of the Afghan people.?

On Monday the second Bonn Conference will take place 10 years after the first one gathered shortly after the fall of the Taliban government. A decade ago Afghan and international leaders gathered to create a transitional government and pave the way for a new constitution.

Today the political and security situation in Afghanistan remains far from settled and Afghan leaders at Bonn will likely be looking to secure continued international support for the decade to come as they seek to create lasting stability.

The first Bonn Conference and the years immediately following it were marked with much hope following the ouster of the Taliban government and violence staying at relatively low levels. Within five years, however, the Taliban resurgence was well under way and the promises of reconstruction and peace seemed distant to most Afghans.

?If the coming 10 years are like the last 10 years, it will make the Afghans very concerned. After the first Bonn Conference they were saying that they were bringing democracy to Afghanistan, but they gave the country to warlords and jihadist groups,? says Babrak Shinwari, a former member of Parliament from Nangarhar.

Despite billions of dollars of international investment in Afghanistan?s reconstruction ? more than $70 billion from the US alone ? the nation has seen questionable progress.

Human Rights Watch was one of several organizations to issue a cautionary statement in the days leading up to the conference. The rights organization warned of a situation ?dominated by poor governance, lack of rule of law, impunity for militias and police, laws and policies that harm women, and conflict-related abuses.?

Still, there is hope enough time remains to overcome the mistakes of the last ten years. In addition to time, many say improvement will also require enduring international funding.

The Afghan government currently gets 90 percent of its public spending budget from international donors and the World Bank recently warned that it will depend on billions of dollars in foreign assistance for years to come in order to stay afloat.

?From the Bonn Conference what we hope is that the Afghan government makes their demands and suggestions in a fair way that can convince the international community to keep their political and economic assistance for the long-term and maintain these achievements we?ve made over the last several years with the support of the international community,? says Zaifnoon Safi, a member of parliament from Laghman Province.

Slovenian center-left party headed to victory (AP)

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia ? A center-left party led by a prominent businessman and mayor of the Slovenian capital was taking a surprise victory in the country's parliamentary elections, early results showed on Sunday, reflecting mounting concern over the economy.

Positive Slovenia, led by Ljubljana mayor and former head of the country's largest retailer, Zoran Jankovic, is leading with 29.4 percent of the vote, the country's electoral commission said after counting some 40 percent of the ballots.

The conservatives ? who were favorites to win ? are trailing with 25.8 percent, the officials said. The leader of the Slovene Democratic Party, former prime minister Janez Jansa, conceded defeat and congratulated Jankovic.

The winner of Slovenia's first snap election since becoming independent from the former Yugoslavia in 1991 will have to tackle the country's mounting debt, unemployment and a looming recession.

"The results show that Slovenia will go in the right direction," Jankovic said of the news. "It is obvious that the citizens want an efficient state."

Serbia-born Jankovic won prominence in Slovenia first as the head of the country's biggest retailer, Merkator, running the company successfully for eight years, before he was removed from the post in 2005 by Jansa. He has been the mayor of Ljubljana since 2006.

The vote was called after the center-left government of Premier Borut Pahor was toppled over economic troubles and allegations of corruption.

Pahor's Socialdemocrats were third with 10.4 percent of the vote, the partial results showed. A newcomer, former minister Gregor Virant is fourth, with 8.1 percent, followed by several smaller groups, who won between 4.5 and 7 percent.

Slovenia has been hit hard by the European debt crisis, with public debt swollen to 44 percent of GDP and unemployment at about 12 percent.

(AP) ? FIFA says former president Joao Havelange has resigned as a member of the International Olympic Committee.

The Associated Press reported Sunday that he had resigned days before he faced possible suspension. The 95-year-old Brazilian official was the Olympic body's longest-standing member. The IOC was preparing to rule on claims he took kickback payments while he was the FIFA president from 1974-98.

FIFA says in a statement to the AP it has "taken note" of Havelange's resignation, and "the fact that the IOC has closed the case accordingly."

FIFA says it "cannot speculate on any decisions made by Mr. Havelange" regarding his status as honorary president. The FIFA congress appointed him to the position in 1998.
