Yemen suicide bomber dies in attempt on official's life

ADEN (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed himself and wounded four others in south Yemen on Saturday in an attempt to assassinate a government official who had targeted al Qaeda militants, a security source said.

The attacker walked up to the parked car of Mohammed Aidarous, who heads a "popular committee" of tribal volunteers who helped the army oust militants from the town of Lawdar in Abyan province this year.

Aidarous, now the local government official in charge of Lawdar, was not in the vehicle but two people in the car and two passers-by were hurt in the blast, the source said.

Yemen has been in turmoil since an uprising against Ali Abdullah Saleh, who finally stepped down as president in February. The Arabian Peninsula state borders top oil exporter Saudi Arabia and lies on major world shipping lanes.

The army has expelled militants from Abyan towns occupied last year. But al Qaeda has struck back with assassination attempts against officials, some successful, and a suicide bombing of a military parade in May that killed 100.

Four members of Saleh's General People's Congress (GPC) were killed in an ambush outside Sanaa on Friday night, the party said on its website. Eight were wounded.

It was not clear if the group was targeted because of its party affiliation. A tribal source in al-Jawf where some of the men worked said the ambush could have been a tribal vendetta.

Saleh remains head of the GPC, which retains half the seats in cabinet. His relatives control key military and security units.

Saleh was succeeded by his deputy Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who has U.S. backing for a transition process that tries to balance the interests of groups including a Shi'ite Islamist movement in north Yemen, southern secessionists and tribal and Sunni Islamist groups who benefitted under Saleh's rule.

Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) | DarkMedia.com

by Julianne Snow:

[Low Spoiler] Synopsis:

In the opening scene of Resident Evil: Extinction you learn that the Umbrella Corporation is still hard at work, though it does remain to be seen if their research is aimed at helping the world or not?

We are then treated to a recap of events from Resident Evil: Apocalypse; showing that the T-Virus was not isolated to Racoon City and sets the stage for the world the survivors are forced to live in now.

With the world a dried up wasteland of abandoned cities, we join Alice on the road as she travels from place to place, doing what she can to find answers and help humanity. After being tricked into a deadly situation, she escapes and through a series of events, finds a journal that indicates that perhaps there is a safe haven after all.

Meanwhile, in another part of the former USA, a convoy of vehicles is crossing the desert. Among that convoy are familiar faces (LJ and Carlos) along with some new ones. Alice hears them over the CB radio, but decides not to join them until circumstances prove it is her only option.

With the Umbrella Corporation looking for a cure for the T-Virus or perhaps just a way to better control it, their only hope is to capture Alice alive.

Waking up one morning, surrounded by a flock of infected crows, the convoy decides to make a break for it. In a scene developed to make you afraid of birds again, they attack and Alice helps to save the day. In the end, the group hears about a potential salvation and decides it may just be their best chance. Their only concern is will Umbrella let them get there?

Their destination: The coordinates of the Safe Haven

Their mission: Escape the Infection

Their fate: Did you really think I was going to tell you?

Review:

The plot of Resident Evil: Extinction isn?t as seamless a fit as the other two films. You are left with unanswered questions such as: where is Jill Valentine? What about Angela? You catch up with other characters like LJ and Carlos, but there is no mention of the fates of the others still alive at the end of Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Part of this issue rests with the fact that the plot of Resident Evil: Extinction does not pick up directly after the end of Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Some time has passed and you?re getting a glimpse into the world after the proliferation of the T-Virus. Trust me; it?s not a word you?d want to live in.

The characterization picks up where it left off and you begin to see what Program Alice is really all about. There were glimpses in Resident Evil: Apocalypse, but the full extent of her powers were not revealed. Milla Jovovich is true to form as Alice, making her the second female actor in my humble opinion to really epitomize a role (the first is Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley). Standout performances are delivered by Ali Larter as Claire and Mike Epps as LJ, in addition to Jovovich.

If you?re looking for zombie action, you?re not going to be disappointed. The scenes where the convoy gets attacked and in Las Vegas will be enough to chill you to the bone. The requisite unexpected scare moments are there, so generally I don?t think you?ll be disappointed. I?m even going to justify my rating which is based in part on the unanswered questions I had after watching the film.

Resident Evil: Extinction is available on DVD and Blu-ray from?Amazon.com.

Is 'Looper'-like Time Travel Possible? Scientists Say Maybe

Time travel is a staple of science fiction, with the latest rendition showing up in the film "Looper." And it turns out jumps through time are possible, according to the laws of physics, though traveling into the future looks to be much more feasible than traveling into the past.

"Looper" stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Joe, an assassin who kills targets sent back in time by the mob. Things get complicated when Joe is assigned to kill his future self, played by Bruce Willis. The movie, produced by TriStar Pictures, opens today (Sept. 28).

In this imagining, time travel has been put to nefarious uses by people operating outside the law. But could such a thing ever happen in real life? [Gallery: Time Travel in "Looper"]

"It's actually consistent with the laws of physics to change the rate at which clocks run," said Edward Farhi, director of the Center for Theoretical Physics at MIT. "There's no question that you can skip into the future."

However, Farhi told LiveScience, "most physicists think you can go forward, but coming back is much more problematic."

The roots of time travel stem from Einstein's theory of relativity, which revealed how the passage of time is relative, depending on how fast you are traveling. The faster you go, the more time seems to slow down, so that a person traveling on a very fast starship, for example, would experience a journey in two weeks that seemed to take 20 years to people left behind on Earth.

In this way, a person who wanted to travel to a period in the future need only board a fast enough vehicle to kill some time.

"That was a huge thing when Einstein realized the flow of time was not a constant thing," Farhi said.

However, this kind of manipulation only affects the rate at which time moves forward. No matter your speed, time will still progress toward the future, leaving scientists struggling to predict how one might travel to the past.

Some outlandish solutions to Einstein's equations do suggest that traveling backward in time might be possible, but to do so could require about half the mass of the universe in energy, and would likely destroy the universe in the process.

And even if science presented a method for backward time travel, there are troubling paradoxes involved.

"If you could go back in time, you could prevent your parents from getting together and making you," Farhi said. "I think some people might say it ends there." [Video - Looper Time-Travel]

Still, since physics doesn't forbid time travel in either direction, the door remains open for future solutions.

"I don't know of a definitive theorem that says it absolutely cannot happen, other than it leads to logical paradoxes and it can also cause the entire universe to collapse," Farhi said.

BidKansas.com auction is back in business | Have You Heard ...

Nazir Jesri, left, and his brother Ammar Jesri of Absolute Natural Stones are now running an online auction company at their store on East Kellogg.

UPDATED ? Brothers Nazir and Ammar Jesri, who own Absolute Natural Stones, are reviving an online auction company they incorporated in 2009.

?We just brought it back to life,? Nazir Jesri says of Auction House LLC, which does business as BidKansas.com. ?We?re starting that with a bang.?

He says ?it?s like eBay, but it?s right here.?

Jesri says he used to use Purple Wave for online auctions.

?I was using the auctions to auction stone in the off season,? he says. ?We lost money the first two auctions, but I kept at it.?

Eventually, he says, Purple Wave informed him that what he was selling was too small to continue trying to sell through its site.

?By the time they dropped us ? we were doing really good.?

After looking for other options and not finding anything he thought would work, Jesri decided to start his own company.

?We did a little research, and we found an auction software company that leases the software,? he says.

Next, he negotiated for warehouse space to start the business. When that didn?t immediately work out, he decided to wait on the idea.

Since then, he?s decided he doesn?t need to take possession of merchandise to be auctioned, so he doesn?t need a warehouse. The business will be based at the stone company, which is at 10909 E. Kellogg.

There won?t be any on-site auctions, which Jesri tried a few years ago.

?People thought we were going out of business. We didn?t want to do that again.?

Jesri says the online auction will take any size merchandise a company is looking to sell.

For instance, if a business needs to empty a warehouse, Jesri says, ?that?s where we come in.?

?We will be happy to auction ? any inventory people need to move out of the way.?

For now, Jesri says the site will cater to companies, not individuals looking to sell small items.

?I don?t want to turn it into a garage sale.?

Belichick fined 50K, Kyle Shanahan 25K by NFL

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NFL fined New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick $50,000 and Washington Redskins assistant Kyle Shanahan $25,000 on Wednesday for their conduct toward replacement officials.

The fines come as the league and its referees' union were meeting amid reports they were close to ending the lockout of the regular officials.

Belichick grabbed an official's arm at the end of Sunday night's game after the Ravens kicked a winning field goal. Shanahan was cited by the league for "abuse of officials" in Washington's loss to Cincinnati.

"It was inappropriate for me to contact the official. I take responsibility for what happened," Belichick said in statement released by the team. " I accept the discipline and I apologize for the incident Sunday night in Baltimore."

Shanahan, the son of Redskins coach Mike Shanahan, was called for unsportsmanlike conduct for berating officials in the final seconds of the Redskins' 38-31 loss. He also confronted an official in a stadium tunnel after the game.

"Any time you do what he did you're going to get fined, and that's the nature of the game," Mike Shanahan said. "If you don't abide by the rules, you're going to pay a penalty and usually after a guy pays 25 grand, they usually learn very quickly."

Also, the NFL said Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh won't be fined for making contact with a game official during Sunday's 31-30 win over New England. Ray Anderson, the NFL's vice president of football operations, said Harbaugh did not violate the rule regarding abuse of officials.

On Monday, the league fined Broncos coach John Fox $30,000 and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio $25,000 for berating officials during a loss to Atlanta on Sept. 17.

Angels win fifth straight to keep pace

By GREG BEACHAM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:09 a.m. ET Sept. 27, 2012

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Although time is running out on both the Los Angeles Angels' playoff hopes and Torii Hunter's contract, the veteran slugger will keep swinging away until it's all finished.

The way Hunter and the Angels are playing down the September stretch, they clearly don't want to be done just yet.

Hunter's RBI singles tied it in the seventh inning and ended it in the ninth, and Los Angeles kept pace in the AL wild-card race with its fifth consecutive victory, 4-3 over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.

Erick Aybar had an early two-run double before Hunter's impressive finish for the Angels (86-69), who remained two games behind Oakland (88-67) after the other three teams in the AL wild-card race all won Wednesday. Baltimore (89-67) is a half-game ahead of the Athletics atop the wild-card race, while Tampa Bay (85-70) has won seven straight to stay one game behind the Angels.

"It's tough, because those games were over (before the Angels played)," Hunter said. "That's when I said, `I've got to bear down and make something happen."'

Something has been happening constantly for Hunter, the 37-year-old outfielder and unofficial team captain who hopes to be re-signed this winter. He has been spectacular down the stretch of his fifth season with the Angels, contributing 23 RBIs in 23 games - none bigger than the two that he conjured against Seattle.

Pinch-hitter Maicer Izturis opened the ninth with a single off Stephen Pryor (3-1) and advanced to third on a wild pitch and Peter Bourjos' bunt. Seattle walked rookie Mike Trout to face Hunter, who coolly stroked a single to center, pumping his fist as he jogged to first with the Los Angeles dugout in pursuit.

"He's been playing so well pretty much all year, especially the last two months," said Bourjos, who scored the tying run as a pinch-runner when Hunter singled in the seventh. "He's getting a lot of hits and really helping the team."

Ernesto Frieri (4-2) pitched the ninth for the Angels, whose bullpen didn't allow a hit in 3 1-3 innings after C.J. Wilson's departure.

With 16 wins in 23 games in September, Los Angeles is 17 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2009 season, the Angels' last playoff year. It still might not be enough to catch Oakland or Baltimore, but Hunter has faith.

"We're just laying in the weeds right now," Hunter said with a grin. "They're the gazelle."

Justin Smoak hit his third homer in two games for the Mariners, who have lost seven of nine. Brendan Ryan and Franklin Gutierrez drove in early runs, but Seattle couldn't capitalize on a solid start by Felix Hernandez, who struck out nine.

Pryor blamed himself for exacerbating the ninth-inning problems with a wild pitch.

"Trout and Hunter are both good hitters, so you kind of pick your poison there," he said. "We were trying to set up a double play there to get out of the inning. I tried to get Hunter to hit a ground ball, but I ended up giving up a soft liner over the infield."

Hernandez pitched six innings of five-hit ball, leaving with a lead before the Angels' seventh-inning rally against reliever Josh Kinney. Hernandez, who is slated to face the Angels again in Seattle next week, is 0-2 in four starts against Los Angeles this season.

Wilson, the Angels' $77.5 million left-hander, had his second straight short start in a nightmarish second half of the season. After failing to get out of the third inning against Texas last week, he gave up five hits, three walks and several hard-hit outs to the Mariners in 5 1-3 innings despite picking up his 800th career strikeout along the way.

"He had some walks here and there, but he was able to get out of some innings without giving up a lot of damage, which is important," said Seattle's Dustin Ackley, who went 0 for 4. "He let the leadoff guy on a couple of times, but he limited the damage that we were able to do in those innings when we could have broken through."

After Aybar staked the Angels to a two-run lead in the second inning, they loaded the bases before Hunter grounded out on the first pitch he saw. Aybar also reached third base in the fourth inning, but Trout's harmless flyout ended it.

Seattle evened it in the third after Wilson walked Casper Wells and Chone Figgins. Smoak put the Mariners ahead in the fourth with a long drive, his team-leading 19th of the season.

Hernandez retired nine straight after Aybar's leadoff single in the fourth, but threw 103 pitches before Kinney replaced him to start the seventh. Chris Iannetta singled with one out, and pinch-runner Bourjos scored from second when Hunter fouled off several pitches before dropping a short single into the outfield.

NOTES: Izturis was 0 for 20 as a pinch-hitter this season before connecting in the ninth. ... The Angels surpassed 3 million fans for the season Wednesday night, reaching the mark for the 10th consecutive year since their only World Series championship. ... Dan Haren starts the Angels' regular-season home finale on Wednesday afternoon against Seattle's Hisashi Iwakuma.

Celebrating Ten Years of LISAvienna - the ... - Business Review USA

VIENNA, September 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

Ten years of successful progress: Life Sciences in Vienna

On 13.9.2012, a mild early autumnal day, over 350 anniversary guests gathered at the Rinderhalle, Neu Marx to celebrate the success of the organisation over the past ten years.

Deputy Mayor Renate Brauner attended the event as a well-wisher and highlighted the special importance of life sciences in Vienna with facts and figures, outlining the progress made over the past few years with the involvement of LISAvienna. "Life sciences have made a huge leap forward in recent years. Vienna seized this opportunity - not only to gain recognition as a prime life science location among international competitors, but also to achieve great success. A pivotal element of this success has been the huge commitment shown by the LISAvienna team," said the Deputy Mayor in her celebratory speech.

During her opening speech, Ulrike Unterer, of the Federal Ministry of Economics, Family and Youth, reminded the audience that the origins of LISAvienna can be traced back to the incentive program "Impulsprogramm Biotechnologie" initiated by the Ministry of Economics and Innovationsagentur in 1998.

LISAvienna's founder and Rector of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, Sonja Hammerschmid, highlighted the success factors in her celebratory speech: "A decisive factor is the support package tailored to the requirements of entrepreneurs, with short decision-making processes and no bureaucratic hurdles. Only in this way can the region develop in a sustainable and internationally competitive way. Particularly during times of economic uncertainty, policies need to be even more prepared to take an acylic approach to absorb the repercussions of market failures."

Life science entrepreneur Joachim Seipelt praised the good total package offered by the Vienna support agencies and the excellent networking between the Life Science companies based in Vienna.

As a representative of the global player Baxter, Harmut?Ehrlich, Vice President of Global R & D and Medical Affairs BioScience, discussed the advantages of Vienna as a research location for international pharmaceutical companies and expressed clear requests to the political decision-makers: "Increased investments are required into research funding and the education of highly qualified workers to secure the Vienna region for the future".

LISAvienna Managing Director Peter Halwachs revealed the secret of the life science location of Vienna. "In addition to the infrastructure created by the federal government and City of Vienna and the coordinated funding and services provided by ZIT, Wirtschaftsagentur, aws and FFG, Vienna is particularly characterised by its combination of excellent research establishments, innovative small and medium-sized businesses and major international companies." Co-Managing Director Johannes Sarx discussed the significance of LISAvienna: "Over the past 10 years, we have held over 600 personal consultation meetings and have been able to welcome over 5,000 people at training and network events. The most important event next year is BIO-Europe, the world's largest biotechnology partnering exhibition which, at the instigation of LISAvienna, will take place in Vienna for the second time at the centre of the global science community."

The climax and simultaneous end of the program was a visual look back over the evolutionary history of the life science centre of Vienna, created by the "Verein zur F?rderung der Kunst von Visualisten, mediaOpera".

About LISAvienna

WB to bring electricity, sustainable fuels to poor | Eco-Business.com

Pledging assistance toward a problem that affects more than a billion people mired in poverty, World Bank Group President Dr Jim Yong Kim announced today that the World Bank will join a United Nations initiative aimed at increasing the poor?s access to electricity and clean household fuels. The effort also will expand renewable energy and enhance energy efficiency.

Dr Kim will co-chair a multi-stakeholder advisory board with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that will provide strategic guidance to the Sustainable Energy for All initiative, launched by Ban Ki-moon last fall. A UN General Assembly resolution named 2012 as a year devoted to sustainable energy for all.

?Ending poverty and ensuring sustainability are the defining challenges of our time,? Kim said. ?Energy is central to both of them.?

An estimated 1.3 billion people do not have access to electricity, and 2.7 billion depend on wood, charcoal, dung, and coal to cook meals and heat their homes.

Dr Kim praised the UN Secretary-General for ?bold vision and leadership? in taking on the challenge. The Sustainable Energy for All initiative calls on governments, businesses and civil society to achieve three goals by 2030: achieve universal access to energy, including electricity and modern cooking and heating fuels; double the renewable share of power produced and consumed from 15 per cent to 30 per cent; and double the energy efficiency improvement rate.

?Providing sustainable energy for all could be the biggest opportunity of the 21st century,? said the Secretary-General. ?Sustainable energy is the golden thread that connects economic growth, social equity, and a climate and environment that enables the world to thrive. This initiative is bringing together governments, the private sector, and civil society in a partnership that?s delivering real results.?

Dr Kim committed the World Bank Group to mobilize its knowledge and policy expertise to increase the impact of its financing of energy projects, which has been just over $8 billion in each of the past two years.

Specifically, the Bank Group will be providing technical assistance to help several countries develop comprehensive energy access programs. The Bank Group also will seek to leverage additional funds by seeking at least $2 of financing from other sources for every $1 the World Bank provides. It will partner with multilateral institutions, bilateral agencies and private sector investors for more funding.

?This is a grand coalition, like that driving the Millennium Development Goals,? Dr Kim said. ?Donors, middle-income countries, and low-income countries all make commitments tailored to their distinct capacities and resources. Each country, company, organization and industry contributes in its own way?whether it is increased funding, new policy incentives, new methods or technologies, or new partnerships.?

Thus far, 61 countries have opted in to the initiative, while businesses, investors and donors have committed a total of $50 billion towards achieving the initiative?s three goals.

Dog quickly takes in, nurses stray kitten in Minn.

JORDAN, Minn. (AP) ? A Minnesota woman says she was shocked when her small dog began caring for an abandoned kitten, then started producing milk and nursing the fuzzy gray stray to health.

Pat Weber says the kitten was days old when her grandson found it in the family's barn in early September in Jordan, about 40 miles southwest of Minneapolis.

She says the 2-inch-long kitten was "ice cold." But she felt it move, so she wrapped the kitten in a warm towel. Then it began meowing ? and her 4-year-old Pekingese perked up.

The tawny pooch named Mittens began licking the kitten, who nuzzled in and began suckling. Mittens hadn't had puppies in two years, yet she eventually began producing milk. She's been nursing the kitten ever since.

Weber calls it a miracle.

Five questions for Romney's Medicare plan

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Medicare is the one health insurance plan that will cover virtually every American at some point in life, and Republican Mitt Romney is proposing the biggest changes since its creation nearly 50 years ago.

With important details still hazy, The Associated Press asked the Romney campaign five questions about how his Medicare plan would affect consumers on critical matters of costs and benefits.

Some of the questions remained unresolved after the campaign's responses. It may take electing Romney to find out how his plan would work. (The AP also sent President Barack Obama's campaign a set of questions about his plans for Medicare, and those responses are the subject of a companion report.)

"One of the things that concerns me about both campaigns is that they tend to use jargon terms like 'competition' or 'protection for benefits' without spelling out how they would deal with the challenges that come up," said economist Marilyn Moon, a former trustee overseeing Medicare finances. "Their answer is to attack the other side, or simply reinforce the same jargon, rather than explaining how things would work."

Broadly speaking, Romney calls for shifting people now age 54 and younger into a different sort of Medicare. Once eligible, these people would get a fixed payment from the government, adjusted for inflation, to pay for either private insurance or a government plan modeled on Medicare. Current beneficiaries and those nearing retirement could stay in the traditional program.

Romney says it's time for bold action because Medicare faces insolvency in 2024, the tip of its long-term financing woes. Private insurance plans would get waste out of the system while protecting quality and affordability, he says.

Some Medicare questions for consumers to keep in mind, along with answers from the Romney campaign and the views of several experts:

Q: What happens if Romney's fixed health insurance payment for future retirees fails to keep up with rising medical costs?

A: Thousands of dollars in costs could get shifted to retirees, punching holes in household budgets. Health care inflation is now in a lull, but historically it has grown faster than the economy, overall inflation and workers' wages.

Romney's campaign says his goal is to avoid cost shifting and to secure for future Medicare beneficiaries affordable coverage options at least as good as what's available for today's seniors. Lower-income Medicare recipients would get more money from the government for their health insurance.

Competition among insurers will keep costs in check, says the Romney campaign. The government payment will be based on competitive bids. "As plans compete with each other to provide better care more efficiently, the growth in (health) costs will slow dramatically and place Medicare on a sustainable long-term footing," writes Romney policy director Lanhee Chen.

Earlier this year, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office analyzed a similar Medicare plan by Romney's running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan. It found that by 2030, seven years after the proposal would take effect, Medicare would be spending about $2,200 less on a typical 66-year-old than would be the case under current policies.

That may not be a problem if competition works. But Obama's first Medicare administrator says the numbers are so big he doesn't see how Romney can avoid cost shifting.

"I would hope through quality improvements we can mitigate rate increases. But Romney has not been clear about how he will cause improvements in care to happen," said Don Berwick. "I think the consequences will be that costs will continue to rise."

Tom Scully, Medicare administrator under President George W. Bush, says Congress would intervene to make up the difference. "The reality is if inflation outstrips that payment, Congress will probably make an adjustment," said Scully.

Q: Will there be a set of guaranteed benefits that private plans must cover in Romney's revamped Medicare?

A: The question is important because having a basic set of benefits would allow consumers to make apples-to-apples comparisons among plans. The Medicare prescription drug program and private insurance plans currently available through Medicare Advantage have a floor of protection.

The Romney campaign website says, "All insurance plans must offer coverage at least comparable to what Medicare provides today."

Some experts say that's too vague. "Comparable" can mean similar in dollar value, but quite different in terms of coverage. Insurance companies can design benefits to cherry-pick healthier customers. A high co-payment for home health care, for example, would discourage frail patients.

Romney said Sunday on "60 Minutes" that private plans will have to offer "the same benefits" as traditional Medicare, but did not get into details.

Q: Romney has said he would repeal Obama's health care overhaul. Would he reinstate Medicare benefits improved by the law? They include closing the prescription drug coverage gap ? the "doughnut hole" ? and expanding coverage of preventive care with no copays.

A: The campaign is silent on this issue, although Vice President Joe Biden is hammering the GOP nominee, saying Romney's repeal of the health law would lead to an immediate loss of benefits for millions of current Medicare recipients.

"I think it would be very hard for (Romney) to take that away," said Berwick.

Q: Romney would turn the Medicaid program for low-income people over to the states, sharply limiting its future growth. The costliest Medicaid cases are some 9 million elderly and disabled people who also have Medicare, more than 1 million of them in nursing homes. Would Romney require states to institute special protections for this vulnerable group?

A: The campaign says Medicaid spending would grow under Romney's plan, and states will have the flexibility to design programs that serve low-income people most effectively. But several experts said the federal government also has to require accountability from states.

"If there is no protection for these people a lot of states are going to start knocking them off the rolls," said former AARP CEO Bill Novelli, now at Georgetown University in Washington. "These are the most vulnerable among us. There has to be a way to deal with Medicaid without leaving it entirely to the states."

Q: Romney's privatization plan would not affect current beneficiaries or anyone joining Medicare before 2023. But does Romney also guarantee that he will protect traditional Medicare from any future cuts?

A: The campaign is silent on this issue. Moon, the former trustee, says it's an important question, and deserves an answer.

"I would be very nervous about remaining in a program that it has been announced is going away," said Moon, now with the nonpartisan American Institutes for Research. "Because there will be fewer and fewer people who will speak up for it over time."

On "60 Minutes," Romney said: "I don't want any change to Medicare for current seniors or for those that are nearing retirement. So the plan stays exactly the same."

Still, it's unclear if that means a guarantee of no future cuts for those remaining in traditional Medicare, or if Romney is merely saying that the overall design of the program will stay the same.

'Dangerous' prison escapee captured in Georgia

Miss. Dept. Of Corrections via AP

Michael Blane Dowda, 48, of Harrison County, Miss.

By Andrew Mach, NBC News

Michael Dowda, the escaped inmate from the Mississippi State Penitentiary that officials described as "armed and dangerous," has been captured, prison officials said Tuesday.

Dowda, 48, who had been at large since Saturday was apprehended in Macon, Ga., nearly 500 miles away from the Mississippi state prison in Parchman, Miss.

Through investigations by the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) and U.S. Marshals in Mississippi and Georgia, Dowda was captured at approximately 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, MDOC Spokesperson Tara Booth said in a statement.

Dowda now faces extradition to Mississippi and multiple charges including escape.

While on maintenance detail, Dowda allegedly broke into a safe inside the home of a Department of Corrections employee on prison grounds and stole two handguns. He then fled the prison grounds driving a white 2005 Chevrolet Silverado truck that he also stole from the same employee.

The prison was placed on lockdown and closed to visitors after his escape.

Dowda is serving a life sentence for murdering his girlfriend, Clarissa Lynn Jarrett, during an argument on Nov. 13, 1996. After Jarrett said she had sex with other men, Dowda got a gun, put it to her head and pulled the trigger, the Associated Press reported. He later said he had removed the clip and thought the gun was unloaded, but authorities said one bullet was chambered.

He chose to be tried without a jury. A judge convicted him in December 1998, and he began serving his sentence at the state prison in January 1999.?

There was no record of any previous escape attempt by Dowda from any Mississippi Department of Corrections facility.

The last escape at Parchman occurred in April 2008, officials said.? Inmate John Compton, who went missing during farming operations, was captured five days later by police in Texas.

Taiwanese, Japanese ships clash over disputed islands

Kyodo / Reuters

An aerial view shows a Japan Coast Guard patrol ship (3rd from top) spraying water toward a fishing boat from Taiwan as Taiwan's coast guard vessel (4th from top) sprays water in the East China Sea Tuesday.

By NBC's Arata Yamamoto and wire reports

About 50 Taiwanese vessels on Tuesday entered waters near a group of uninhabited islands at the center of a bitter territorial dispute involving Japan, China and Taiwan.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK showed footage of a Japanese coast guard ship shooting water at a Taiwanese fishing boat, while a Taiwanese patrol vessel blasted water at the coast guard ship in reply during an incident near the disputed Senkaku or Diaoyu islands, as they are known respectively in Japan and China/Taiwan.

The Taiwanese vessels ? 40 fishing boats and 10 coast guard ships ? entered the waters to protest the recent Japanese government's purchase of the islands from a private owner.

But by noon Tuesday all of the Taiwanese vessels had left the area, the Japanese coast guard said, after claiming their rights to fish in the area.

Japan infuriates China by buying disputed isles

The islands were nationalized by the Japanese government this month after it emerged that the outspoken governor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara, had been in negotiations with the islands' owner to seal a more provocative deal by promising to build an emergency port for Japanese fishermen and various weather and communications facilities.

Osamu Fujimura, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, said during a morning press conference that Japan had lodged a protest with Taiwan.

"In terms of the security surrounding the Senkaku Islands, we will continue to work together with the relevant ministries with a sense of alertness, and gather various information and vigilantly monitor the situation," he said.

"Our position is that this needs to be resolved under framework of our friendly ties with Taiwan, and to deal with the situation calmly," he added.

Chinese protesters: 'The Diaoyu islands belong to China!'

While few experts expect a military confrontation, an unintended clash at sea would increase tension, although all sides are expected to try to manage the spat before it spirals out of control.

NBC News emailed Taiwan's foreign ministry requesting comment on the incident and received a reply saying, "Thank you for your concerns about the issue, and please be patient for our further response."

September 18, the anniversary of Japan's 1931 invasion of Manchuria, is seen as a day of national humiliation in China, marked by protests even when relations with Japan are stable. This year's anniversary came amidst a Sino-Japanese dispute over an island chain called the Senkaku islands in Japanese and known to Chinese as the Diaoyu islands. NBC's Angus Walker reports.

The islands are also claimed by China, which has long regarded Taiwan as a breakaway province that is actually part of China.

Meanwhile in China, Japan's Vice-Foreign Minister Chikao Kawai began talks with his Chinese counterpart, Zhang Zhijun, the first diplomatic meeting between the two countries since anti-Japanese riots erupted over 100 cities across China amid rising tensions over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands.

Emotional anniversary reignites anti-Japan protests in China

Before Tuesday's meeting, the Japanese envoy told journalists that he planned to explain Japan's position in a frank manner.

"Considering the difficult situation involving Sino-Japanese relations, we would like to do our best to move our relationship forward,? Kawai said.

Much at stake for US as tensions rise in troubled China Seas

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman on Monday suggested that a resolution of the dispute would be difficult.

"China will elaborate on its position on the Diaoyu Islands, demand that Japan correct its mistakes and make efforts to improve Sino-Japanese relations,? Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei said, according to the UPI news service.

Jasmine Is The Best iOS 6 YouTube App Available On The App Store For iPhone 5 And iPad

Advertisements

Those of you who have installed iOS 6 or purchased a device like the iPhone 5 will notice that it no longer has the YouTube application bundled as part of the OS. Google have released a fairly decent app onto the App Store, but at the moment it doesn?t come with a native iPad version meaning that users needs to run it as an iPhone app on the iPad. It is also yet to be updated for the new iPhone 5.

There aren?t a great deal of alternatives for YouTube fans on the iOS App Store, but for those who consume a lot of videos on their devices then the Jasmine YouTube Client for iOS is definitely worth checking out. The Jasmine application is fully iPhone 5 compatible and looks beautiful on the new 1136?640 display. It is also a universal app meaning that it is fully compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

iPhone 5 iOS 6 main

The user interface that ships with Jasmine is minimal yet stunning and highly easy to use and navigate around. It also contains a number of small, yet perfectly executed animations that add a little touch of magic and flair to the user experience. A perfect example of this is selecting the Search option to find a video. The Search button flips on its head and a new text field and two new buttons animate into position. The animations last long enough to look great but not delay the user or affect the experience.

Jasmine2

All of the expected functionality is covered by the application, such a being able to search and filter through videos, search by different categories, view related videos and read and leave comments. A comprehensive settings panel within the application also allows users to set the application up to their liking with the great option of choosing between a night and dark mode that switches the interface between a light and clinical setup to a dark and sombre creation. All in all, a great little app that also offers an excellent iPad experience for those who are running iOS 6.

Forensic Related Books - Digital Forensics Forums | ForensicFocus ...

Just completed my MSc in Computer Forensics, so I have developed a mini-library of forensic books Smile Here's a few of the books I went back to time and again:

Brian Carrier - File System Forensic Analysis - The core book for any forensic library. Explains the computer file system at a low-level, which gives you a huge insight into the file system at the hex/binary level.

Venema & Farmer - Forensic Discovery - a great beginning overview of computer forensics.

Jones, Betjlich, Rose - Real Digital Forensics - Another great all rounder book. Has a great section on analysing unknown programs (stack analysis etc)

Harlan Carvey - Windows Forensics and Incident Recovery - focuses on Windows forensics (duh). Really points out what to look for on a Windows system during an examination. Great section on perl for Windows - the forensicator's language of choice Smile

Altheide, Carvey - Digital Forensics with Open Source Tools - does what it says on the tin. If you haven't shelled out for EnCase/FTK, this provides you with the alternative tools to do the job (it also doesn't hurt to have alternatives anyway!)

Eoghan Casey - Handbook of Digital Forensics and Investigation - Gives a good introduction to Windows, Linux and Mac forensics, as well as mobile forensics. Good section on methodology as well.

Specifically looking at mobile forensics, there's:

Andrew Hoog - Android Forensics

Hoog, Strzempka - iPhone and iOS Forensics

Jonathon Zdziarski - iPhone Forensics

There's also a wealth of information on the authors' blogs - much of it updating/improving on material in the books. But as athulin says, there's no "catch all" book - many of the ones above offer a broad overview, but if you want to focus on a subject, you're probably better off going online and reading white papers, blogs etc to get the more specific information.
