Hack a Cheap Side Table for Sliding Remote Storage

Hack a Cheap Side Table for Sliding Remote StorageIf you're purchasing an Ikea Lack or similar inexpensive side table for your living room you can add a hidden sliding storage area by buying a second table top, cutting a storage area out of one the tops, and mounting the other on top with sliding rails.

Furniture modifications weblog Ikea Hackers performs this hack on a $9.99 Lack table: simply cut a square hole from one of your table tops, remove any interior layers (such as Ikea's cardboard honeycomb), and mount the uncut table top to the cut table top with a set of sliding rails.

The size of the storage area will depend on how thick the table top is, but using an Ikea Lack you should get enough for most remotes and game controllers. It's a good way to keep your remotes handy and out of sight. If you do this with Ikea tables make sure to check out the As-Is section for your sacrificial table.
