Despite the fact that there is a zero tolerance policy when it comes to truck drivers being under the influence of drugs or alcohol while driving, the sad truth is that there are far too many times in Louisiana -- and throughout the country -- where these drivers are behind the wheel while impaired.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2 percent of all fatal trucking accidents in 2010 involved truck drivers with blood alcohol contents between 0.08 percent and 0.14 percent. Another statistic points to the fact that of those who were over the legal limit, half were actually higher than 0.15 percent, which is nearing -- or in some cases going twice over -- the legal 0.08 driving limit.
However, these weren't the only statistics to recently be released. As part of the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign happening in Louisiana and around the country, the NHTSA reports there were 10,228 drunk driving-related fatal accidents in the U.S. for 2010. Of those, 70 percent of drunk driving fatalities involved a driver with a blood alcohol content of 0.15 percent or higher.
The same agency reports the most common blood alcohol content reported in a deadly crash was 0.18 percent.
Looking to the future, while this increase in drunk driving enforcement could result in more drivers ending up arrested for driving impaired, in cases where an accident already happened there are other ways besides criminally to hold a driver accountable for the injuries and deaths caused to others by their negligence.
